My family had just moved to Lincoln County New Mexico and my mother want to start school at the local school but I was a little scared about going to a new school I knew that mother was sick but my mother tried not show that she was sick she hugged me and said Henry be a good boy at school and have a good day at school I walked to the school well I knew that my first day of school wasn't going to be very good as soon I walked into the class room and sit down at a desk in the back of the class a gang of boys calling them selves the Murphy and Dolan gang started throwing things at me saying look at the small fry he sure is ugly and he sure won't get any girls he is an Yanke who should go back up north where he came from go back up north where you belong you damn yanke you are not wanted here I tried not to let them bother me but it was getting very hard not to let it get to me that is when Chavez walks into the class room I could tell that Chavez one of the cool kids and that the Murphy and Dolan gang doesn't bother him he walks back to the back of class room where I was sitting and getting bullied by the Murphy and Dolan gang Chavez hits one of them and says you leave him along or you will have me to answer to you got it they go away and leave me alone Chavez sits down in the desk next to mine and looks at me and says my name is Chavez what is your name? I said to him my name is Henry McCarty but I like to go by William H. Bonney I go by Billy Chavez smiles and says don't worry Billy they won't bother you again and after that first day Chavez and I have been best friends and brothers the next day I was the saddest day of my life because my mother had died of tuberculosis and I really missed my mother. the day after that I come to school late with bruises on me and the back of my shirt ripped and my back striped and cut my teacher miss Angelique seen it and asked Billy who did this to you I told that my stepfather done it to me it was one of his beatings that he said that I deserved it Chavez said no Billy he is wrong you don't deserve to be treated like that. miss Angelique said that she was going to have a talk with my stepfather I told her that he had put me out on the streets to fend for myself and he took my stepbrother Joe and left town she asks Chavez if he knew of a safe place for me to live and Chavez told that I could live with him at Mr. John Tunstall's ranch. and I have been living at John's ranch with Chavez ever since we first met at school. we are brothers and we will always be brothers until the sprit horse comes for us all.
