This is my first memory of my aunt.
I was about 8, my sister, my dad, both of my brothers, and myself were on our way to our aunts house. She lived in Michigan and she had a 10 acre property with 4 mixed chow dogs. We got to her house, she was outside and she saw something in her peripheral vision, then she saw us and waved. We hopped out and ran to her and hugged her. We talked for a little while and asked if she needed any help with anything. "Well, I was about to make some pies and I have not picked the fruits yet. I would love some help with that." We all jumped up ready to help. We even had work clothes on because we knew that when we go to visit, some work needs to be done. Helping with her garden, or cutting her grass, or even just cleaning the house. We made games out of these chores because as children that's what you did. She also knew that we get bored and if we are bored there is always something for us to do.
We picked blueberries, apples, and cherries, which were the pies that were being made. We were tall enough just yet to see over the counter so we had step stools so we could see what she was doing and for us to do that. We washed the fruits and cut them. She taught us how to make the crust of pies. Taught us how to use the oven and how important patience and measuring is in baking. A very important lesson in life, of patience and measuring your time. She explained how long she leaves them in the oven for. "You guys can go play, but be back before the timer goes off" She says to us. Everyone left to go outside and play with the dogs except for me. "What made you want to learn how to bake?" I asked her and she smiled. She told me why she did and what else she does.
"Wow, I want to be like you when I get older. You seem like you know exactly what you want and how you want it done." I smiled. "That is because I do. I have ever since I was about your age. I realized that I like certain things and can make those hobbies and I liked computers a lot and can make that my job, so I did." She smiled back. I looked at her with a look of inspiration and admiration. I value everything that she taught me that day. The timer was about to go off, everyone came back ready to see the pies. Timer went off and she pulled all of the pies out of the oven. They looked amazing and so done perfectly. "Who would like to cut the first pie?" She smiled. I wasn't fast enough in raising my hand and my sister got to do it first.
She got up on the step stool while our aunt went to the cabinet to grab a knife. She walks back towards us and stands next to my sister. "Are you ready?" She asked my sister and my sister shook her head in excitement. She took her hand and held the knife and my sisters hand and they cut the pie.
This is one of my favorite memories of my aunt because she did all of this with a smile on her face.
