Chapter One

The night was moving over the city, laying the outer corners in the dark. The only light came from a few working lightbulbs, giving enough light to see the outline of the train stations and roads levitating in different heights over the ground.

Most of the rundown buildings in the outskirt the city, were barely visible shadows creating a labyrinth on the ground and in the air. People were rushing home in the dark from trains that went the whole way into the heart of Rhea.

People walked steadily on the roads leading from the train stations, even though they were in a desperate need of maintenance and the sides had started to crumble. At least once a month someone get serious hurt, because of crumbling roads and buildings.

Grace made sure to cover her wristband under her sleeve, everyone had one and everyone knew to keep them hidden in the dead of night. The light from them would be sure to give away your position to every thief or government agent roaming the streets.

Grace zipped her black hoodie up all the way, not because she was cold, it was to hide her face and disappear in the shadows. The base of her black guard uniform automatically cooled down or heated up as the temperature changes, and the sturdy fabric covering it in squares and triangles are easy to move in. Her long, brown hair was braided into a tight braid hiding underneath her hoodie and her green eyes gleamed in the occasional light that shone on them.

She looked around and up at a train speeding past her overhead, disappearing towards the lights of centrum of the capital. Where everything was clean, and perfect gardens wind around the shiny, white skyscrapers that lit up in distance.

She rushed past the narrow alleyway leading towards her old home, she knew that she would never be able to go back there or back to her place in the guard.
After bringing in hundreds for random execution, it must have been karma that she also got chosen.

One hundred fifty years ago was the way to eternal life discovered, the scientists that discovered the curse of eternal life warned about the overpopulation and power unbalance that it would result in. Of course, no one listened, the already overpopulated earth was at the breaking point fifty years later. The government officials unwilling to give up on power decided that for each person that became immortal, one had to die. It was supposed to be all fair game, the truth however were that it usually only were the people one the bottom who got the message that death was closing in on them. Grace knew that a couple of powerful politicians and elites who already had gotten the cure to eternal life, paid of the guards top officials to execute people with similar looks or names to their children when they had gotten picked.

She was taken from the streets to join the guard force right before her eight birthday, a guard had seen her sneaking around an alleyway and climbing some old fire escapes. He had brought her in to his superiors, they took her in to train and become a guard.
She rose in rank and before her fifteenth birthday was she in charge of training new recruits, when new recruits came to headquarter was she usually the first person they met.

Most recruits do not start to train before they are fifteen and many of them were volunteers from well-off families, but Grace got a head start and fought to keep it.

She stopped for a second. The narrow alleyway to her left, lead up to an empty and rundown church. A thousand years ago were a great war fought, it nearly eradicated the whole earth and everything living. A war fought just because of differences like religion and skin colour, which Grace found kind of ridiculous considering no one were bright yellow like a banana or neon green.

After that, while the world was built up again on the knowledge hidden in case of emergency by their ancestors, the new leaders of Northland decided that religion should be forgotten and buried together with the old world. Religions did not thrive, but most of the big ones from before the war survived in small communities.
