When The Blizzard Came

You start to get out of breath as you are running through the building. There are footsteps pounding behind you. They get closer as you run past the red lockers. You turn the corner. The cafeteria is not that far away. There is a second of relief before you fall to the ground. The footsteps are gaining again, and you think this is it, you are done.

“Hey are you okay?” Emilia asks when she comes up behind you, with her curly hair everywhere. You sigh in relief, it is just your best friend.

“I thought you were the killer chasing me,” you say, so happy that it is her. You would have been done for if the killer found you.

“No, I was in the bathroom when I heard another scream. I saw you running, so I joined you.”

“Why didn’t you say it was you?”

“I was too busy trying to keep up with you,” she lets out a laugh.

You see something out of the corner of your eye. Once you realize what is happening, it is too late. The knife hits Emilia. You let out a scream and run to where you saw the knife thrown. There is a figure running in the distance. You start to chase after them, but common sense gets the better of you. When you look back at Emilia, she is being silently wrapped up by the other students. It has become a process now, wrapping up the casualties. There are now three gone, including Emilia. The white blowing snow outside lights up the dark hallway, and you see Emilia’s lifeless face. You start to cry. The tears that stream down your face are as fast as the snow falling outside. Some students walk up to you and give their condolences. After each loss the energy level of all of us goes down.

Nobody should have left the cafeteria. That is where this all started. The teachers should have told us to stay seated when we heard the scream. We were all in the cafeteria because of the blizzard outside. Everyone was perfectly fine. All of us talking with our friends. Then, there was a shriek in the gym. Of course everyone followed it. That is when the chaos happened. A girl in your grade was lying dead on the floor. It was an ugly sight. That is when you realized that there was a killer in the school that had to be stopped.

The Principal was still in his office trying to call our parents and say that everything is okay. At least that what you hope he is doing. There is a possibility that he is the one doing the killing, but no offense to him, he doesn’t look like a fast runner.

You go through the list of suspects. It could be the girl with the ugly green in her hair. Or maybe it is the quiet girl always reading her books. Maybe the guy who always gets in trouble with the school. As you go through the list no one sticks out to you. It could be anyone, maybe the lunch lady, the assistant principal, a friend, or a random student. You just want to get out of this alive. At the same time you do not want anyone else dying. That is why you keep looking for the killer.

As you take another look to see if anyone is missing, you lose track. There are too many people. They are all taking with each other, some are sobbing over their lost friends

There is another scream in the distance, but it is cut short. You break into another run, surprised you haven’t lost your breath by now. You run past the lunch room, and down by the office. Right past the office a heap is lying on the ground. As you come near it, realization hits you. It is a person. You run to them and the person is still breathing.

You yell for the others. Some of your friends come and pick him up. You ask him questions such as “What’s you name?” and “Who did this to you?”, but he only responds with moans. The others take him to the cafeteria as you ponder what happened to him. You walk quickly through the hallway.

You list the casualties, first, the girl in the gym. Her name was Lisa Tanner. She was a senior. She was one of the most popular girls in school. She was mean too, it was her and then everybody else. If you got on her bad side she would treat you like dirt until you made up for it. You can understand why someone might want her dead. Sometimes she could go over the limit with her meanness.

Second, a boy that was a junior. His name was Glenn Abney. He was the best football player your school has had. Several college recruiters had offered him a scholarship to their school. All the girls swoon over him and the guys envy him. You have talked to him before and he seemed nice too. Now the question, why would someone kill him?

Emilia Boyce was the third. She was the smartest girl in the school. Everyone loved her. She was going to be valedictorian for our grade. She never got on anyone’s bad side. She could not hurt a fly, she was too nice.

When you get back to the cafeteria, a boy named Ethan comes up to and informs you that the last boy hurt is cleaned up and is doing fine. You think he is a freshman. No offense to him, but he did not have any importance in school. At least you have not heard anything important about him.

You approach the boy to ask if he is alright. But before you reach him you hear a voice. It is yelling help! At first you hesitate, then you run.

You run down the corridors and the yelling gets closer, but when you reach the sound it stops. In the middle of the hallway everything is quiet. You see something in your peripheral vision. You turn and it disappears. You start to hyperventilate. This was a mistake to come here you say in your head repeatedly. You get ready to turn around when the hairs on your neck stand up. “Oh no”, is the last thing that you think before shock takes over and you fall on the ground. You feel a sharp pain in your back and warmth starts to spread through your back. You think of this morning when you walked in the doors of the school and felt the heat. That is what it feels like now. You try to turn around and the pain spreads. When you look up you see the face you are shocked to see.

“Hello,” squeaks the tiny voice Makayla Sanderwood. The quietest girl in school. She was a good student. She did not stand out in a crowd. She asked me strangely,  “How are you. We haven’t talked in a while.”

By now your vision is getting blurry. There is a lump in your throat and you cannot scream for help.

“I knew no one would think it was me. The quiet girl who did everything she was told. Well I’m tired of it,” she stated, obviously annoyed.

“Why?” was all you could choke out.

“I wanted the people that hurt me to pay for what they did. Lisa, because I ran into her once and she ruined everything. She made sure everyone either ignored me or made fun of me. Even the teachers joined in! Do you know what that feels like? Then Glenn because he ignored me too. I asked him to homecoming and he laughed at me and started to make fun of my glasses. So I thought that mean people didn’t deserve to play football. At first I was going to just going to break something, but then he tried to run away, so I punished him. Then Emilia, sweet Emilia. She just had to get better grades than everyone else. I was so close to being valedictorian, but then she came along and ruined it.

“What’s left is the boy and you. The only reason I hurt the boy is because I thought he saw, but when I realized he didn’t the damage was already done.” You are starting to lose consciousness, but you could still hear what she was saying, “Now, the only reason I’m killing you is because you are getting in my way. The last two times you almost saw me, now you won’t see me again.” After that the darkness takes over and the world becomes quiet.

After Makayla is done a group finds her and ties her up. The students wrap you up and put you with the others. Eventually, the storm dies down and the police come to the school. When the parents arrive, the four parents stand and cry as the principal tells them what happened. The police take Makayla away and the kids go home. Most of them are scarred, no one will forget the day when the blizzard came.
