Your last period class went by hair-raisingly slow. You watched the minutes on the clock tick by, while your thoughts barreled through your head at the speed of light. Alice and Edward said they'd meet you in the woods. Something about the urgency in their words, and the looks exchanged between themselves. They knew something you didn't. Something dangerous.
Finally the bell rang, and with it came a sudden rush of dread and excitement. The two feelings mixed felt odd, and settled deep into your chest. With a deep breath, you headed into the misty woods. The trees closed in on you slowly, and you felt your heart rate pick up, going faster and faster. Where were they? You stumbled farther, getting more and more panicked. What if it was all a set up? What if they left you? You clutched at your shirt, your palms sweating. Right as you were about to turn around, a voice rang from in front of you.
"Please don't panic, it's alright!" It was Jasper. As he looked at you, a sense of calm seemed to wash over you like a cloud. It was confusing, but somehow you couldn't bring yourself to be scared anymore.
"I- what's going on?" You question, the whole situation seeming more and more confusing.
"You better sit down." Edward's voice rang from behind you. You turned around to face him, realizing that Alice was also by his side.
"Edward there's no where to sit." She said tersely, before turning to face you. She gave you a small smile. "You see.. there's something we need to tell you. I saw- I mean," she hesitates, letting out a little sigh. "Gosh, this is hard to explain."
You raise an eyebrow.
"How about you start by explaining why all of you are so.. weird?" You exclaim, tossing you hands up in desperation. You turn to face Jasper, and he looks away. "You're like.. Bipolar or something! And somehow, can't make up your mind whether you hate me or not!"
He looks up, his eyebrows wrinkling. "I don't hate you. I could never.. hate you."
"What does that even mean?" You were getting frustrated at this point.
"Listen, just, calm down." Edward prompted, and you turn to him.
"Says you!"
Alice huffs. "Shut UP! All of you!" She faces you, grabbing your shoulder softly. "Just, please hear me out."
Your guard falls. You nod, clutching your hands together.
"We are.. different...than most people."
You glanced at Jasper. His face was serious, and still as stone. It almost scared you.
"So.. you're different? How so?"
Edward rolls his eyes. "We're just.. different. That's all you need to know for now."
Everything was so confusing. What were all these shady, half-warped answers? What were you even doing here? It was all getting to be too much.
"I-uh- I need to go." You mumble, shaking your head. As you grab your backpack from the ground, you feel a hand grab yours, stopping you.
You glance up. Jasper slowly lets go of your hand, but his eyes remain glued to yours.
"Please, don't go."
His voice was like silk to you. You nod slowly, your mouth open slightly. He seemed pained, and it concerned you.
"You deserve the whole truth. These last few days haven't been great for you.. I know. So,"
He pauses, taking a moment to collect his thoughts.
"Before I say anything, I need to know you'll never say anything about this. Ever."
"She won't." Edward answers, before you even have a chance to reply.
You squint your eyes at him, confused. "Is that.. a threat?"
"No, I just know you won't." He answers blankly. You decide not to question it anymore. After all, he was right. You would never say anything that could ever hurt Jasper. You turn back to Jasper, and he continues.
"Well.. we aren't exactly human. Or at least not anymore. It's been this way for awhile, and we constantly have to move and such so.." he trails off.
"That's why I've been so.. moody. I don't want to get attached to you."
You could feel your eyes widen a bit, and you try your best to mask your surprise.
"You're seriously telling me you are some type of.. mythical creature? So what, you're like a.. fairy or something? A wizard? An elf?"
Edward lets out a dry chuckle, and Jasper's face just gets more serious.
"A little different than that."
"So what than?"
"A vampire."
