Phoenix stood there holding you for an eternity it seemed, and you felt whole again. When a knock at the door broke the silence, Phoenix became tense and moved away from you quickly. Your sense of wholeness dissipated. Phoenix turned to you and a clear wave of jealousy passed over his face. " Are you expecting someone, love?"
"No." You reply harshly. You watched the jealousy in his face turn to rage as another knock came from the front door.
Phoenix shook his head and stalked over to the front door and opened it abruptly.
David took one step and when he did, Phoenix stepped out of his way and said, "Just the man I wanted to see."
Your blood ran ice cold and before you could say anything, Phoenix punched David in the face and grabbed him by the shirt. He slammed David against the wall and kicked the front door shut.
"Where did you get your information, Dave?"
" I haven't the foggiest idea what in God's name you're talking about but you're going to pay for the tooth you just knocked loose." Phoenix punched David again.
" I don't give a fuck about your teeth man. Tell me what I want to know or you're going to need dentures when this is over. Who told you I was dead?" Phoenix screamed, beads of sweat pouring down his face. You watched them silently, fear keeping you anchored where you stood.
"I had a hunch after you were away longer than you should have been."
" C'mon pal, just tell me who told you that bullshit."
"No. I'm not putting my neck on the cutting board for you. Not again."
" You're a real bitch, you know, that right? Can you at least tell me how you found out?"
"A phone call from a burner phone" David grumbles, blood oozing from the corner of his mouth.
"And you didn't think to call me?"
"You don't have your personal phone when you're on your trips." David growled, shoving Phoenix away from him.
"You know as well as I do that if I were killed, they would have had my phone and the number destroyed. You should have called. Instead you came to Raven. Why?" Phoenix grabbed David by the shirt once more and pinned him against the wall, slamming him against it roughly.
"Because... He's said he was watching.... That he'd kill her if I didn't tell her that. He wants to destroy you..." David stammered, visibly shaking.
"Who did? David, I swear to Christ... How did you get sucked into this?" Phoenix days, releasing David and pacing like a caged lion.
"Because I'm the closest to you. We work for the same company in different ways. I have a menial job. You do the real work."
"Dave hush."
"Why? "Phoenix looks over at you, noting your confusion and sighs.
"Because I didn't want her involved. I didn't want her to know anything. I thought that would have kept her safe. Unfortunately, there are eyes on all of us. Who is the man you spoke to?" Phoenix says in an agitated tone.
"Landon Braves."
"Well fuck me..."
