In the next days you received messages from Oikawa now and again. Normal things like 'Good morning.' or 'I'm at volleyball practice.'
You would answer with your own 'Good morning' or 'Good luck!'. Nothing special.
Before you knew it, the days had gone by and along came Wednesday. Doomsday. Today you were going on a 'date' with Michael after classes.
Marie had dropped by the day before to borrow you some of her clothes. She had picked a few different styles so there would be something to your liking.
In the end you found that you looked pretty good, but not too fancy. You wouldn't want to stand out during classes.
The day went by so fast that you almost didn't have time to get worked up. Almost being the keyword here.
You were on your way to the exit, where you would meet Michael, when your phone buzzed. You stopped and fished it out of your pocket.
'Are you free later?'
It was Wakatoshi. He usually messaged you around this time when he had time for a lesson in the morning. Morning for him, the middle of the night for you.
You sighed sadly as you typed your reply.
'I'm sorry, I've got other plans.'
It was the first time you had to say no to him and you didn't like it. You got a reply not much later.
'Ok'
You were used to getting short replies from him, yet this one bothered you.
'Ok? Would you still think it was 'ok' if you knew it was because I'm going on a date?'
You shook the thought out of your head and resumed your way to meet up with Michael, more motivated now to make sure you had a good time.
Michael took you to a cozy local place, nothing too posh. You felt more at ease when you took in the decor and other customers, it was all 'normal'. This could've just as well been a family dinner or a dinner with a friend, you liked it.
The menu was the same way, simple and normal. You could read everything on it and knew what everything was.
When the waiter came around with your drinks, you ordered your favorite meal and handed him back the menu.
Michael ordered something light, prompting you to ask him if he watched what he eats because of volleyball.
He gave a bit of a nervous laugh. "Yeah, is that weird?"
You shook your head. "Not really, it's cool that you are so devoted to it."
He looked wistful. "It's just for college though. After that I'll probably be too busy working to be able to play much."
You sipped from your drink hoping you hadn't soured the mood.
"It's like that for most people though, it takes a lot of talent to be able to play sports for a living."
"I think you're pretty good though, but then again, I don't really know anything about volleyball." You tried to brighten him up again somehow.
"And you haven't even seen me play at a hundred percent." He grinned.
The conversation lightened up again after that and you generally had a good time. The food was good and the dessert you ordered after was delicious. You had an easy time talking with Michael about everything and nothing, but still did not feel confident enough to really open up to him yet. You even talked about Ushijima for a little bit, as your 'online volleyball friend'.
After dinner Michael picked up the bill and after some complaining from you, agreed to let you pay next time.
He insisted to drop you off at home, but you were able to convince him to take you back to campus and leave it at that.
"I had a great time." He told you as you arrived at the deserted campus.
You nodded . "Me too."
He seemed to be thinking about something for a moment, but then just said. "We should do it again sometime."
You watched as his breath came out in puffs of white and remembered that he didn't like the cold. "Yeah, that's a good idea. I'll see you later okay?"
He waved at you. "Yeah, later."
He watched until you were out of sight and then turned to make his own way home.
When you arrived at your studio, your nose was red from the cold and you were craving a hot drink.
As you settled into your couch you noticed a text from Michael.
'Let's go watch a movie next time.'
You took a little bit of time before replying. 'Ok.'
After warming up a bit, you turned on your laptop and checked Line. Wakatoshi was not online.
You shut your laptop and decided to call it a night. It was early for your standards, but for some reason you did not feel like staying up any longer.
You took a shower before going to sleep and when you stepped out of your tiny bathroom, you noticed that you had another text. It was from Marie this time, asking if your date had ended and how it went.
You gave her a short recounting of the night and told her that you had had a good time. She was excited and happy for you, and you couldn't help but think that you wished you felt some of her enthusiasm.
It was true that you had had a fun night and that Michael was a nice guy, yet you didn't feel as elated as one would expect after a date. You felt surprisingly normal.
You went to bed, convincing yourself that normal was good and it was a sign that you had felt at ease.
The next day when you were halfway your second lecture of the day you received a message on Line.
It was not from Wakatoshi however, it was Oikawa.
'Where were you yesterday?'
You raised a confused eyebrow. What did he mean where were you? How did he even know you went somewhere?
'What do you mean?' You sent back and hoped Oikawa would clarify himself.
