Prolog:

"Arianna!" I heard Emrys yell but I was already running towards Williams. He had always been there for me, my strong rock my protector. Just the day before Williams had jumped in front of me to take a bullet for me and here he was being tossed around like a rag doll. My eyes narrowed and I pulled out the dagger from its sheath at my hip and ran at the woman holding unconscious Williams.

"Arianna I can't let you do this." Emrys whispers and the world starts to fade.

"Finish him." Emrys snapped and that was the last thing I heard.

Chapter One:

The clang of two swords never lost my interest.

"Watch your footing there Arianna, you always slip up." Williams said and brought his sword up to swing at my left shoulder. I effortlessly blocked it and spun around to lunge at him. I flicked my wrist and sent his sword flying and held my sword level with his throat.

"Will! its not that I slip up, it's that it makes for a good distraction to my opponent. You taught me to always fake them out if possible, if I remember your lessons correctly." I said and lowered my weapon as he smiled and pulled me into a bear hug.

"Aria that was amazing, you perfected the move and managed to beat me all at once!" Williams said happily and spun me around.

"Arianna to the debriefing room" The loudspeaker screeched and I winced.

"You have another job? Aria this is not safe! If I hadn't been there last time to save you, you would have died. I can't keep my promise to always keep you safe if you keep applying for suicide missions." Williams scolded and placed me on my feet. I picked up my sword and placed it in its sheath around my hips and blew Will a teasing kiss as I walked out of the room.

"I'll be fine Willy" I laughed and walked through the otherwise empty hallways. The hallways at Lady Catharine's School for Guards were usually full but lately there had been less and less people around, more getting killed every day. I suppose to someone who had never seen it the school seemed pleasant, maybe even beautiful, but to someone like me who had grown up here it was miserable. I took as many jobs as I could simply to get out of the once confusing maze of hallways that was the school. I walked into the headmistress's room and saw my client and froze. He had shaggy curly blonde hair and simply from the way he held himself I new what he was. She had given me a job to protect what we protected people from. She gave me a job protecting an immortal.

"Ah here she is right now." Lady Catharine said smiling and gestured to me. I had one hand on the hilt of my sword and he chuckled. He f*cking chuckled.

"Lady Catharine may I talk to you?" I asked and she looked at me with her eyes filled with pity.

"Sure my dear lets speak as we roam the gardens. Emrys please make yourself comfortable, just remember not to leave my office or you may get a less controlled reaction than you did from my daughter." Lady Catharine said and his eyes widened with shock.

"Yes mi lady." The vampire said nodding and stayed sitting. We walked out to the garden and I spun around on my heel and glared at my mother.

"What the hell is this?!" I yelled and she looked down.

"No one else can take his case other that Williams and I know he wouldn't. No one else is strong enough Arianna." She whispered and I sat on the bench.

"He's an immortal mother! We do not protect them we kill them!" I yelled pulling my hair. I let out a scream of frustration and Williams came running around the corner. He saw my mother and immediately dropped to one knee. We were commanded to always show that much respect at least or we would be suspended from our weapons and none of us could handle that.

"Lady Catharine I apologies I, I did not realize that there was no danger." He said slowly and only I caught the slight annoyance in his voice.

"It is fine Williams. Please stand up." My mother said and he rushed to me seeing the panic on my face.

"Aria what's wrong?" he asked generally concerned.

"My job is protecting an immortal." I said barely above a whisper and his hands clenched.

"My Lady Catharine may I request to take on the job instead, or at least with her?" he asked and I shook my head.

"No Will." My mother said softly

"He would not have you with him. Only a female." My mother said and I got up. An immortal was similar to the old tales of vampires but with a twist, they also changed shape upon command and only in their true form could you kill them. Even then the old tales of holly water, crosses, stake through the heart, the sun or even muttering prayers didn't work. You had to behead them with a weapon laced with diamonds, gold and silver to get them to die. It was hard work and extremely dangerous.

"Oh I wonder why that is! Mi Lady please-" Will started but I cut him off with a look.

"I will go gather weapons." I said in a monotone voice and walked towards the storage shed. Emrys. I new that name! Emrys wasn't just any immortal; he was a prince among them. Not to mention that it was his brother that murdered my father and sister. It was him and his brother that put me and my mother in this business and now I was going to protect him? No. No I was not. I was going to do something that would probably get me killed and if not I would at least get fired and exiled from the school, the only place I had ever called home. Did I care? Yes. Was it because I was not going to get to come home after this job? Maybe a little but mostly not. It was because I was going to leave behind what I had left of a family and the only beings that ever treated me normal and with any respect. I was going to lose my mother and Williams.
