Mikey's pov
When we got to the store, Dad grabbed a cart. "Where to first?"
"Hmm we probably need to get other things too so let's just start at the milk and stuff." He nodded and walked to the back of the store. I started humming 'Come and Get Your Love'.
I saw him smile. "What?"
"Nothing."
"Sure."
"I'm just the luckiest man in the world."
"Why's that?"
"I have the most amazing daughter, an amazing man in my life, an even more amazing grandson and, to top it all off, my daughter is happy. At least, as much as you can be." I smiled. "I love you, kid."
"I love you too, Dad." We grabbed milk, eggs, butter, and bacon before he turned to me.
"What snacks do you want?"
"Doritos and popcorn."
"Okay. Let's go get them." I ran ahead of him. I heard him laugh and walk over to me. I started grabbing the snacks. "What does Leo like?" I grabbed a few boxes of the scooby doo graham cracker snacks. He nodded.
"He could live off of them."
"I think we all could," he said laughing.
"You're not wrong." He walked further down the aisle and put zebra cakes, Cosmic brownies, oatmeal cream pies, and gushers into the cart.
"Ew who likes zebra cakes?"
"No one. Carter only eats them because they were something his mom gave him and now they disgust him but he feels awful if he doesn't eat them. It's complicated."
"Oh."
"Yeah," he said quietly.
"So what else do we need?"
"Nothing else that I know of."
"Okay let's go."
"Wait! We do need one more thing."
"What?"
"We gotta go over to the more intimate section real quick."
"Okay."
"I'm gonna mess with Luke."
"How?" He looked at the shelf before grabbing Viagra.
"I'm gonna piss him off."
"Oh god."
"But it's gonna be funny."
"Yeah."
"I'm gonna switch this out and put it in the Advil bottle."
"You're going to die."
"He's not gonna know who did it."
"If you say so."
"He only will if you tell him."
"Maybe I will maybe I won't who knows."
"Remember I can ground you. Eww I sound like a dick. Nevermind just please, Mikey."
"I'll think about it."
"You suck."
"Technically we both do." He grabbed the Viagra and shook his head.
"You're not wrong." I laughed. "Let's go check out." We headed to the check out. He went to a self checkout and started scanning everything. When we were done, we took everything to the car and headed home. "Thanks for coming with me, kid."
"No problem, Dad."
"Can you just grab your Doritos?" he asked as he picked up the rest of the bags. I grabbed the Doritos and headed inside. Carter was doing push-ups while Leo was sitting on his back, giggling.
"Having fun?"
"Yeah, mommy." I smiled and helped Dad put the groceries away.
"He really loves you, you know?" Dad said.
"Yeah."
"I'm serious. He has never gotten along with any kid. At all. But my god does he love you both."
"Really?"
"Yeah. There were kids in their old neighborhood and if Carter even stepped foot out the door, which was rare, they would all run. I remember the day the one knocked on the door," he said as he started laughing hysterically. I looked at him confused and opened a bag of Doritos. "Okay, so Brian had asked me to come over for dinner and just chill and whatever. So, I get there and we were all watching TV when there was a knock at the door. At this time, Carter was with some skank and thought it was her so he opened the door. The poor kid at the door immediately stopped smiling and looked like he had just shit himself. He apologized and ran away and Carter just shrugged. It was funny as hell."
"Oh okay. I need to sign up for my college classes." I grabbed the computer I used to register Leo for school.
"Why didn't you finish college?" I got quiet.~Flashback~
"Mikey you can't just drop out of college," Colton said trying to stop me from leaving.
"Don't you get it I'm nothing. I'm the school's joke...a failure. You don't know what it's like to be worthless where nothing matters. I feel that way every day of my life. EVERY DAMN DAY!" I walked out and never went back.
~End flashback~"Mikey?"
"Huh what?"
"Are you okay?"
"Um yeah just thought about something."
"Thought about what?" I explained what happened the day I dropped out of college. He hugged me. "I'm sorry."
"It's fine."
"Just let me know what you need help on, okay?"
"I will." He nodded and started making dinner. I got signed up for my class and texted Colton about what I was doing.
"Mommy!"
"Yes?"
"Come look at what Dad can do!" I got up and walked into the living room.
"Do it again, Dad!" Leo said as Carter did a one handed push-up while Leo was sitting on his back. I smiled.
"Cool..." Carter looked up at me.
"You okay, baby?"
"Um I will be." He got up and walked over to me.
"What do you mean, beautiful?"
"Just thought about something that I haven't thought about in a while."
"Do you wanna talk about it?"
"Yeah. I need to."
"We'll be down in a minute, Leo. Mommy and I have to talk about something," Carter said as he wrapped his arms around my waist. Leo nodded and started watching tv.
Carter grabbed my hand and walked me up to our room. He shut the door and I sat on the bed. He sat beside me.
"What's going on?" I explained what I told Dad earlier and how I still sometimes feel like that.
"Baby, I don't want you to feel like that. You are not worthless. You are not a failure. You are the most incredible woman I have ever seen and you are worth more than the whole world. You've done so much good and I am so lucky to be able to call you mine."
"Thank you, Carter."
"Of course, kitten. You are so much stronger than anyone I know, including myself. You're the only reason I'm still here."
"I'm sure I'm not the only reason."
"Well, there's Leo too. But before him, when we first met, I was going to kill myself," he said quietly.
"Well I'm glad you didn't." He smiled and hugged me. I hugged him back.
"And don't you leave me either. Please," he begged.
"I won't."
"Promise?"
"I promise." He grabbed the sides of my face and kissed me softly. I smiled.
"I love you."
"I love you too, Mikey."
"Let's go back downstairs." He nodded and we walked back downstairs. I grabbed my Doritos from the kitchen and sat down on the couch next to Leo. Dad took my Doritos.
"We need these for dinner. I will get you more."
"I sad now."
"But we're having tacos."
"Okay."
"Babe, come help me!" Dad yelled. Brian went to the kitchen.
"Just remember that we don't want sour cream on our tacos!" Carter yelled. Luke burst out laughing.
"Oh my god."
"I don't get it," Leo said.
"That's a good thing, Leo. Just watch tv."
"But, Mommy."
"Leo, don't worry about it."
"Otay." There was a knock at the door.
"I'll get it," I said as I answered the door.
"Who is it?" Carter asked. It was Dean.
"Leo, go upstairs. Why are you here?"
"I want my son back."
"Well you're not getting him so leave."
"He's my son."
"Bitch did you give birth to him no. He is my son and you're not taking him." I heard Carter snickering behind me.
"You abandoned the fucking kid. Now go be a good mom and pack his shit."
"I didn't abandon my kid. You're the one who left him at my door all alone. Who knows what could've happened to him."
"I want my son."
"No." Dean stepped closer to me.
"Why not? You want him to become that?" he asked pointing to Carter.
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"Look at him, Mikey! He's just a wannabe emo piece of shit!"
"Says the one who hit me and my son saw it."
"He'll probably end up teaching Leo how to slit his wrists to be cool." I froze after that statement. "His parents are probably disappointed in him."
"You need to fucking leave." Carter flew past me and started punching Dean.
"Brian! Carter, stop!" Brian ran in.
"Oh shit! Jon!" Dad ran in. Brian grabbed Carter and Dad pulled Dean away. I looked at Dean.
"Just fucking leave."
"Great! Now you have an abusive fuck to beat you and my son around!"
"You're one to talk!"
"What the fuck is that supposed to mean!?"
"You know exactly what it's supposed to mean! I mean you were like my parents!"
"I was not, you psychotic bitch!"
"Get him out of here!" Brian yelled.
"Really? Cause that's not what the cops saw you fucking bitch!" Dean pushed past me and walked towards the stairs. Carter grabbed him by his throat.
"Just get the fuck out of here Dean."
Dean started choking as Carter dragged him towards the door. Once Dean was outside, Carter slammed the door and locked it.
"Dad," he squeaked. I sat on the floor and put my head in my hands. Dad hugged me as Luke ran to finish dinner.
"Are you okay?"
"No..."
"Come here," he said holding his arms out. I hugged him. He hugged me back. "It's okay."
"I'm going to go cry in the shower if you need me," I said quietly.
"Mikey."
"Hmm?"
"I don't want you alone." I sighed. "I'm sorry."
"No I get it."
"Do you think they're really disappointed in me?" Carter asked.
"No," Brian said.
"I'm sorry, Mikey," Carter said. I looked at him confused. "I shouldn't have acted like that, but I couldn't help it."
"It's fine. He needed it."
"I'm gonna go check on Leo." I nodded. Carter went upstairs.
"Dinner's ready," Luke said.
"I'm not hungry."
"I don't think any of us are anymore, but it's there."
"So can I go cry in a shower yet?"
"Promise you won't hurt yourself?" I stayed quiet. "Then no. Not unless you are supervised."
"Then can someone do that?"
"Do what?" Carter asked as he walked downstairs.
"Supervise me while I cry in the shower."
"Come on, kitten." We went upstairs to my bathroom and I turned the water on.
"Thanks for doing this."
"It's no problem. I'm going to take your razor out just to be sure." I nodded as I took my clothes off and sat in the shower. "I love you, Mikey."
"I love you too, Carter. Can you play Fiction by Lund?"
"Of course," he said putting the music on.
