~Tamryn's POV~
It was a few days away till I had to write the biggest exam of my life. Trying to becoming a lawyer and having a personality like mine was, as others believed, a bit messed up. I of course couldn’t give a rat’s ass. What I wanted to be was my problem not theirs. And I for one knew that I’d make a kick ass lawyer. To hell with all those sons of bitches.
“Babe, you’re been busy with that for the past three hours.” Pete said putting his hands on either side of y shoulders. “I think it’s about time you take a break.”
“Yea? And I think it’s about time you shut the fuck up.” I retorted. “You know that I have to write the Bar exam in a few days. I don’t have time to waste.”
“Studying for three hours without a break is insane. Tam, you need to rest you brain for a while.” He made to close my books but I grabbed him hand to stop him.
We stared at each other in silence. He took a deep breath, exasperated. “Fine. But eat something at least. For me? It’s pointless having a girlfriend if she’s dead. I’ll be right back.”
I sighed and leaned back into my chair. I ran my fingers through my hair and shook my head. I knew that I was spending extremely little time with Pete, but there was nothing else I could do at the moment. For now, my hands were tied. Maybe after I’ve written the exam, we could spend the day together. As a couple.
A few minutes later, he returned with a sandwich and a glass of orange juice. I narrowed my eyes at him but accepted the food anyway.
“Eat. It’s no use studying without food.” I rolled my eyes and took a bite out of, what I discovered was a ham sandwich.
“I’m sorry. I just want to be a lawyer so bad. This revision is eating at me. I feel guilty every time I take a break.” I explained.
“It’s anxiety. You’ll get over it. I’m going to the store for a while. That kid who wanted to learn how to play the guitar has been bugging me the whole month. See you later?” I nodded and he leaned down to kiss me on my forehead.
The second he was out by the door, I returned to my books. Eat; sleep, shower or whatever else could go to hell. I had way more important things to give a fuck about.
I woke up to the sound of voices on the TV. I sat up rubbing my eyes, searching blindly for the remote. I switched the TV off not really remembering when I put it on. Yawning and stretching my arms out above me, I walked to the kitchen and dug around in the fridge looking for the orange juice. I grabbed a glass out of the cupboard and drank the juice which was all of a sudden poured. As I was gulping down the last bit, my eyes moved to the digital clock on the wall.my reaction would have been completely normal given the time but it was the date that made me spit all the contents out of my mouth. According to the clock, my exam was this morning. Two hours ago. I ran my fingers through my hair and rushed for the phone.
After a few rings, a man picked up. “Good morning.”
“Hi, my name’s Tamryn Hamilton. Was calling to enquire about his morning’s exam.” I said in rushed words.
“Ah yes.” I head some shuffling of pages. “According to this register, you missed the exam.”
“Yes, I know that.” I said rolling my eyes. “Is there any way for me to write it at a later date?”
“I’m sorry Ms. Hamilton, but there’s nothing that we can do. If you missed the date, you’d have to wait till the next date. In other words, reapply.”
“Are you sure? I’ve spent so much time stud-”
“We hear that all the time. I’m sorry. You should have been here on time. Good day Ms. Hamilton.” He said then hung up.
I pulled the phone away from my ear and stared at it for a second before throwing it against the nearest wall. My life was over. And no, I wasn’t being a dramatic little drama queen. I had no money, couldn’t hold a job for more than a few months and now I had to wait heaven knew how long before I could write the exam. If this was someone’s idea of a joke, then it or they were seriously sick and fucked up.
I heard someone call my name but when I looked around no one was there. It would have been creepy because I knew that I was alone in the house but the creepier thing was that the walls looked like they were closing in on me. I heard my name again and this time I could feel my heart beating faster. My breaths became more and more shallow and the pictures on the walls fell as it came closer. I tire to run but I found that I was in a state of paralysis. I tried to scream but my voice was gone. The person calling out my name repeated it like a broken mantra. I tried to follow the voice, but I couldn’t move and it was getting darker and I couldn’t see anything.
The walls were so close to me now. I could hardly breathe. This was it. This was how I was going to die. In all fairness, I thought this was a completely messed up way to say ‘to hell with the world’. Just as the walls were about to touch me on either side, I closed my eyes and felt someone shake me.
“Tam, wake up! Babe, you’re having a nightmare.” Pete? I heard his voice from somewhere above me.
I opened my eyes slowly, afraid that I was only hearing things. But no, there he was, Pete, smiling down at me.
“Thank God. For a moment I thought I was a goner.” I said with a sigh of relief.
He narrowed his eyes at me but I shook it off with a wave of my hand. “Forget it. It’s nothing. You want to go out for an ice cream?”
He nodded at me after a moment and left to fetch out jackets. I chuckled to myself. Sometimes- most times- I couldn’t believe that he was with me willingly. I was just too crazy for words.
An hour later we found ourselves walking from the coffee shop next to the ice cream shop with scalding hot coffees in our hands. We figured that since it was so cold outside we’d get a hot drink and take an evening stroll in the park. We found an empty bench under a lamp post and decided to sit down for a while.
I heard soft murmurs here and there of people’s conversations. It wasn’t too long before it dies down and all I could hear were the crickets chirping in the area.
“It’s cold but I like this feeling.” I said breaking the silence.
“What feeling?” Pete asked after blowing into his cup.
“Freedom. Even though I know I have to back home and resume studying, this feeling right now males m feel free and at peace.” I almost whispered.
“I told you a break would do you good.”
“Well you were right.” I took a sip of my coffee. “Thank you.”
“It’s what I’m here for.”
We smiled at each other and sat there a while longer without saying anything. The soft rustling of the leaves and the crickets were enough. I rested my head on his shoulder and sighed in contentment. I break was exactly what I needed.
