Chapter 1

"Oh, my goodness! I'm so excited! I just can't wait; I've been dreaming for this day, for like, forever! Don't you just feel me, Ella? We get to wear dresses, and we get to wear these cool, mysterious masks! Ella, Ella, Ella?"

I blinked as I was brought back to reality by my best friend, Natalie Evans. We were currently sitting in a booth at Steak n' Shake. Natalie works at Steak n' Shake sometimes after school or on weekends.

"What are you talking about, Natalie? Sorry, but I lost interest after the first three words." I teased my friend playfully as she rolled her eyes.

"The Winter Masquerade! Can you just imagine? It's December the 6 and it's already snowing! I know it's December and all, and it should be snowing. It's just so early in December. It'll be beautiful, though. We can wear those pretty lace long sleeve dresses, and we can curl our hair, and paint our nails. Doesn't that sound fun, Ella?"

I sighed knowingly. Natalie loved going to these things, while me — well, I just didn't see the fun in them. But, this one was different. Something about winter makes everything magical.

"Yeah, beautiful, Natalie. I just can't wait!" I squealed with fake enthusiasm even though I was kind of excited.
Natalie rolled her eyes again and said, "Well, you just see, Ella. I know you'll have the time of your life, but I don't blame you for that. I blame you for being reluctant. You know, it'll pay off one day to just let go. Your such a pessimist. Be like me. But oh, it's next Friday! And today is Thursday!"

Since there were so many responses to that, I just said whatever.
"Well, I start my shift here in ten." Natalie said passing the shake we were sharing over to me. "Don't worry," she said standing up. "It's on the house." She winked leaving me with the shake.

You're probably thinking, 'Why are you drinking a shake in the winter?' Well, I'm always up for a shake.
I sipped on my shake, thankful that it was in a to-go cup. I exited Steak n' Shake waving bye to Natalie on my way out. I used my spoon to get the M&Ms out from the bottom. I got in my car, putting the cup in the cup holder, and started the engine. I pulled out of the parking lot and drove home.

"Hey, honey. How was Steak n' Shake?" My mom asked me when I arrived home. I always liked to eat at Steak n' Shake, but my mom thought their food was nastily unhealthy.

"It was good." I replied placing my keys on the counter.

"Well, I was thinking this weekend we can go dress shopping for that dance your school is having on Friday. You can bring Natalie with you. I think it would be fun!" My mom always loved Natalie. Natalie was like a second daughter to my mom. I was, after all an only child.

"Sure, mom." I forced a smile on my face. I hope shopping with my mom didn't make it tense. My mom just has that charisma. But I know Natalie loves my mom.

"Are you alright? You seem quiet today." I laughed at my mom.

"Aren't I always quiet?" I asked her. My mom just smiled and shook her head.

"Ok, just go wash your hands; dinner will be ready in a little while." I nodded and went up the stairs.
