Deep breath in, eyes closed. The smell of salt filled her small nose as the soft sound of ocean waves could be heard, almost as a gentle lullaby wanting to lull her into a peaceful sleep. Wind gently blew her soft auburn hair around her tiny pail face. Andrea smiled as she dug her toes into the sand. As a seven year old her imagination ran wild. She pictured herself as a lady pirate landing on a beach for the first time and taking it all in and now she was going to go off and find the treasure on this hidden island.
Her hazel eyes popped open when she felt a small squeeze from the hand she was holding. She glanced up to her mother and gave her a smile. "Do you like this place, darling?" her mother asks.
Andrea nodded her head in the slightest motion. "Yes." She answers simply, her eyes now looking upon the swirling ocean. She noticed how the waves almost, in a way, rocked like a baby's bed, or even like a rocking chair.
"Mummy..." She starts. "Do you think it's funny how the waves move? It reminds me of a rocking chair."
Her mother laughed. "I guess it is quite funny, darling." She states. "Now, how about we go see grandpa? He already told me that he was going to bring you out to the beach." She says with a sweet, tender smile.Trinity nodded. "Okay mummy. But are you sure you can't stay with me and grandpa?" she asks her mother with a small frown.
Her mother shook her head. "Andrea. I've already told you that the reason why you are staying with grandpa is because mummy has work to do over the summer and with your Aunt Claire moving away to America, there isn't anyone close enough to us but your grandpa. And anyways you haven't seen your grandpa in ages. He misses you. And he told me he was going to give you lots and lots of ice cream and candies." She says in a happy tone.
Andrea nodded, somewhat happily. "Okay and I know...I'm just going to miss you." She says as they start to make their way back to where their car was parked on the side of the road.
Her mother squeezed her hand gently. "I know, darling. I will miss you too. But don't forget I promised to call you as much as I can." She says as she helped her daughter into the small car.
Andrea smiled brightly at her mother's words. "Okay mummy." She says as her and both her mother buckle into the car.Andrea looked around. She looked at the seagulls that soared above the ocean and above the white sand of the beach below them. In her head she wished so hard that she could fly. She remembered when she was two that her daddy would pick her up and pretend like she would be flying like a bird or a super hero. It just depended on what kind of mood she was in. She missed her daddy a lot. All she remembered was her daddy being sick and having to go the hospital and he never recovered after that. Her mother, of course didn't want to tell her the truth, so she told her for a long time that he was just sleeping. But she figured out in her head later on that it meant he had died, because her mother had told her the same thing when her pet fish died. She remembered her mother crying, not in front of her but only in her mother and her father's room. Her father's memory was it as clear as she wished it could be. She remembered his smile clearly and his laugh. But some of the times the spent together had already started to fade a bit.
By the time she had finished thinking about all of these things they were pulling up to a small house painted a pail blue color, which was located in a small neighborhood that secluded from wherever the bigger city was. She looked at the house as she saw a frail old man emerge from the house. She knew it was her grandpa and laughed softly as she saw his big ears. She wondered curiously to herself as to why his ears were so large. Unlike the other older people she met he still had lot of hair on his head, which was a silver almost white color. He had the friendliest and most warming smile, exactly like her mothers. In her opinion her mother had the best smile. No one could beat hers. When she was sick, sad, angry, or no matter what her mother's smile would completely brighten her day.
She unbuckled quickly and opened the door of the car. She quickly unbuckled her seat belt and ran up to her grandfather and hugged him.
"Hi grandpa!" She said loudly.
Her grandfather chuckled merrily. "Hi kiddo!" he says happily as he hugged his small granddaughter. After minutes and minutes of her mother giving instructions to her grandpa she was finally ready to leave. Andrea went to her mother and hugged her tightly. This was going to be the last hug for the whole summer and it had to be a good one. Her mother gently picked her up and hugged her tightly.
"See you later. I am going to miss you so much, my darling." She said as she cuddled Trinity close to her.
Andrea smiled up at her mummy. "I'm going to miss you too. A lot. And please don't forget to call." She says.
Her mother laughed kindly. "I won't. I promise. And if you give your grandpa trouble there will be no super fun mummy-daughter day." She says with a cock of her eyebrow.Andrea laughed softly with a nod. "I promise I will be super-duper good for grandpa." She says proudly.
Her mother kissed her nose softly. "Okay, we will just see when I get back." She said softly then placed a small kiss to her daughter's small forehead. "Goodbye my darling." She said as her lips stayed still against her daughter's forehead."Goodbye mummy." She said quietly as her mother set her down on the ground.
Andrea walked over to her grandpa and stood next to him as she watched her mother get back into the car. She smiled and waved as her mother slowly backed out of the driveway and drove off. She looked up to her grandfather with a smile.
"Well, I have already got us lunch made. Your mother told me that you absolutely loved peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for lunch, we will eat right after we get you settled into your room." He says happily.
Andrea smiled and nodded. "Thanks!" She says happily as they walked into his house as they both carried some of her luggage inside. He brought her to a girl's bedroom, which she figured was her mother's from when she used to live in this house.
~.~.~Hours later her and her grandfather had played many rounds of card games and checkers together and he had told her about the little swing set he had outside from when her mother was little. She had quickly asked if she could go and play on it, and of course he had told her yes.
She sat there now looking around and just taking in this new world that was hers for a whole summer. Her grandfather was living right on the side of the beach and she could go out and have so many adventures together. She watched as the wind blew the small blades of grass, getting absorbed in the way the grass moved. She heard small footsteps approaching and looked up to find a small brunette boy coming her way, his nose was small and it was very red from the cold wind blowing against him. Without a word said he quietly sat next to her and looked out at the ocean. She stared at him for moments unsure of what to do, finally looking back out at the beach.
"Are you new here?" The boy asked after a while.
She nodded "Yes, the old man that lives in this house is my grandfather." She said quietly."Oh, well he lets me sit out here and swing. And I was just wondering because I've never seen you here before." He says.
"I'm Andrea." She says looking over at the boy with a smile.
"I'm Logan." He replies in response to the girl's introduction of herself, now looking at her with a friendly smile.
