Fane and I half-carried, half-dragged Damien between our nude bodies, which were then covered in bruises and scratches from the dense wood growth. As we neared the supernatural hospital, I began yelling at the top of my lungs, “Rosie! Help! Now!”

Rosie rushed out of the back door I would usually take to and from training sessions, her eyes widened at the sight of Damien, “What on earth happened?!”

“Harpies.” replied Fane. Rosie checked us all over whilst we took Damien into the emergency room, across from the kitchen.

“Why did you walk? Did they destroy the car?”

“No, bloody Will decided to transport the Harpie in it. Said she was top priority, not Damien.” I replied, not even trying to soften the hate in my voice. We laid Damien on the bed whilst Rosie busied herself with making the magic healing goop and other remedies to heal Damien and lessen his pain. I kneeled beside his bed, holding his hand, trying to keep the tears from pouring down my face. I felt Fane place a robe across my shoulders before kneeling next to me.

“I’m so sorry.”

“You have nothing to be sorry for. Will has to answer for this.”

“What do you me-”

“He wanted to leave Damien there. As far as I’m concerned, Will damaged the treaty between my pack and the Hunters. He needs to be taught a lesson.”

Fane put is arm across my shoulders, I rested my head on his.

“There’s no changing your mind is there?”

I shook my head, “I promised that I would do everything and anything to protect my pack, the people my father loved so much. I need to prove to everyone who looks at me, who hears my name, that I am a strong leader and I will protect my family no matter what.”

Fane let out a sigh, “Fine, but I’m going with you. I’m not going to stop you but I am going to stand between you and them to prevent you from doing anything your going to regret.”

I couldn’t help but smile, “You are most definitely the better half of me.”

Fane let out a deep chuckle, “At times, maybe. As time goes on, you will see that at other times, you will be my better half.”

Before I could ask what he meant, Rosie came running in, a million bowls and vials balanced in her hands, we both got up and left the room, leaving Rosie to work her magic. Instead of waiting around, I ran up stairs and pulled on some jeans, a t-shirt and converse shoes. I bolted back downstairs, grabbing the sedan keys from the key bowl near the front door. I heard Fane following me out the door, he grabbed my arm and took the keys off me.

“You shouldn’t be driving, you need save that anger for the hunters.”

We sat silently in the car as Fane drove to the Hunter’s HQ. I looked out the window at the passing outside world, thinking about Damien - my fear of the possibility that I could lose him - about Will - my hate and anger at how he made the Harpie beast his priority over Damien - it was all surreal. I always thought that Will was a little more human than that, apparently I was wrong. Maybe Fane was right, Will was too far up himself allow a relationship between himself - a hunter - and a were-wolf alpha to develop. I looked back at Fane, his pale skin contrasted with his dark hair and his green eyes stood out so brightly. My wolf still jumped around in my chest at the sight of him.

The car pulled to a stop outside of the book store, I didn’t even need to take in a breath, I got out of the car and made my way to the door, somehow managing to take Fane’s hand in mine in the process. We walked through the door, causing the bell to ring throughout the store. Caroline came waddling out from the back of the store, a smile plastered on her face, “How can I-”
