Jimin arrived home to his two storey, middle class clean house, in his middle class neighbourhood. Cutting across a freshly mown lawn he entered the modest accommodation from the kitchen and was met by his mother. Mrs Park was a working mom, and she was still wearing her white nurses uniform, sat at the kitchen table working out their weekly bills. The smell of rameyon and kimchi stew invaded his nostrils as it bubbled on the stove "Hi eomma" he said as he kissed her on the cheek before removing his shoes and placing them in the rack by the door. Jimin's younger sister, sassy 14 year old Jaewon rolled her eyes at his entrance scoffing "Oh look, it's semiconscious Jimin living his best life" as she continued to scroll through instagram, double tapping without even looking at the pictures, he flipped his middle finger up and continued walking past.
Mrs Park shot them both a disapproving look, "Hi sweetheart" she said to Jimin, "how was work?" she asked. Merely shrugging Jimin continued the obstacle course that he would face on a daily basis to get to his bedroom, it was a little game he played with himself to cut through the mundane. Firstly he would dodge his mothers questions as they were the same each day, and she wasn't really interested in his response. Then he would hold an invisible shield up to deflect his sisters nasty tongue as he did an imaginary duck and roll into a crouched position, bypassing the sharp weapons (AKA his youngest sisters toys) and finally avoiding the end of level boss by making himself as small as possible until he felt the sweet relief of his room.
Today however the big boss, or rather his dad had other plans "Jimin, is that you?" he shouted from the living room. "Shit" breathed Jimin under his breath, he halted at the bottom of the stairs feeling the weight of the next few minutes heavy in his heart and had hoped that he could avoid this, it had been a long assed day and he wasn't in the mood. He stepped into the living room where Mr Park sat reading the local newspaper from his leather armchair, the one he seemed to live in. Spread in front of him on the table were College applications and University brochures. Jimin narrowed his eyes, he could sense something different in the air this time. "I've been checking out colleges" his father addressed him matter of factly. Jimin took a deep breath determined not to bite, so instead offered "aren't you a little too old for college appa?".
"Jimin, for fucks sake" shouted his father, "when are you going to act your fucking age and get a god damn clue!? Don't think you're gonna stay here and live off me and your mother for the rest of your life, you need a career, you need to go to God damn mother fucking college". He saw the veins in his dad's neck pop and knew that prodding a sleeping bear such as his father would cause him to explode, but he couldn't help himself, his dad made it too easy and went from zero to sixty without much prodding. Mr Park took a breath and attempted to calm down realising that shouting at his ambitionless son wasn't going to change him "Look, Jimin", ah the gentle approach thought Jimin to himself. "If I had gone to college, or had the opportunity, I wouldn't be working in a factory making tyres six days a week". Jimin hated to hear his dad put himself down and felt momentarily sorry that he'd caused his blood pressure to rise. "Appa, you're good at what you do, you provide for your family and you work hard" Jimin said sincerely.
It wasn't often Mr Park got any kind of response from his son who he though must be dead from the neck up, and he took this as an opportunity to press the issue further. "Why don't you take a minute and have a look through these brochures" he pressed standing and placing an arm around Jimin. Jimin knew he was pulling the big guns out now and if he didn't escape soon he'd be enrolled, packed and halfway to college before he could get out the room. Jimin decided to play his father at his own game and looked at him with his wide eyes and pouty lips "can I please do it later appa?" he asked "It was busy at work today, I made a little extra to go towards the bills" he said pulling some wons out of his pocket. He knew his parents felt guilty taking money from him, but with 3 kids to feed, a minimum wage and part time nurses salary barely cut it. His father let out a long defeated breath as he took the money, and he knew the puppy dog eyes had won, "go and wash up for dinner son" resigned his father "we'll talk about this later", and with that Jimin hot footed it to the sanctuary of his room, one-nil to Jimin he smiled to himself as he threw himself down on the single bed of his poky box room.
Jimin took out his phone and decided to text Yoongi, he'd been a little cold with him that morning, feeling out of sorts at the monotony of his humdrum life. At least he came home to a family, a warm meal, a comfortable bed. Yoongi spent his nights in that tin can that he rattled about in with his half absent brother and they lived off microwave meals and instant rameyon. He was a shit friend sometimes and suddenly felt incredibly guilty

Jimin placed his phone back on his night stand and went to tell his mom to stretch the food out to another plate. She never minded, Yoongi was like a permanent fixture in their home over the years, they pitied the boy and his circumstances and would never grumble about him coming over. Even though he was full of tattoo's and the odd piercing, his colourful exterior hadn't rubbed off on her son leaving his skin untouched, and she was glad of that. He wasn't a bad kid, he'd just been dealt a shitty lot in life, and she suspected was the only real friend her son had. Jimin also had a selfish reason for inviting Yoongi over, he knew that the conversation about college wouldn't be reignited from earlier giving him another nights grace, he smiled to himself at his genius dodging skills as he waited for his best friend to arrive.
