32.
One of the shift managers came looking for Sean in the corridor of the hospital.
"The supervisor wants to see you in her office. It's urgent." He said.
As soon as Sean arrived in his boss's office he could already tell by the look on her face that something horrible had happened.
Without a word she handed him the phone.
Bewildered by all of this Sean automatically took the phone and pressed it against his ear.
"Hello?"
"Am I speaking to Sean Nichols of apartment 1-A Riverdale?" The officious male voice said.
"This is Sean Nichols."
"Mr.Nichols? I'm Detective Davis and I have some ...bad news."
Sean's face paled as he listened to what the man had to say.
Detective Davis met him outside the smoking hulk of the parking garage twenty minutes later.
The firetrucks and other rescue vehicles were parked along the street with their lights flashing
and a small crowd of civilians had gathered in the street to gawk.
The pall of smoke hung heavy on the air.
It was a nightmare scene and Sean's legs weakened as all the strength drained from his entire
body and he stumbled on the pavement and would have fallen had the Detective not grabbed a firm hold on his shoulder.
"Are you alright?" His tone was sympathetic.
"No."
Sean was staring at the twisted and charred wreckage of Rozelle's Volvo in disbelief as it was hauled away on a flatbed truck.
His mind couldn't accept any of what was happening right now.
"I'm really sorry this happened." The detective, a small, well dressed African-American man said. "But I need to ask you a few questions. Are you up to it?"
Nodding, Sean made a massive effort to pull himself together.
"Let's go to my car." The detective said, leading the way to a tan Buick parked in the driveway.
A small crowd of Sean's neighbors silently parted to let them through and the detective opened the
passenger side door and helped Sean inside before going around to get in on the driver's side.
His sharp brown eyes were trained on Sean's face like two miniature spotlights.
"One of your neighbors made the call." He explained."Unfortunately by then it was too late. Once again I'm terribly sorry for your loss."
"Just ask your questions." Sean's voice came out sounding harsher than he'd intended.
He was slumped in the seat covering his face with both hands and struggling to come to grips with what had happened to his beautiful wife.
Right now he felt untethered from reality and there was an odd
ringing in his ears and a tightness in his chest that he recognized as symptoms of shock.
Rozelle? Dead?
He couldn't belive it.
Sean began nervously wringing his hands together but stopped when he saw the detective eyeing his hands.
"Did your wife have any enemies?"
"No."
"You might want to give the question some thought."
