It was just shy one in the afternoon and I was driving home from the office. I decided to work a half day since it was Monroe's thirty fourth birthday. I rolled the window down in my truck and let the sun warm my body. The Nebraska April was unkind to us and blasted us with many cold fronts and moisture.
I swung by a flower shop and bought her a bouquet of summer flowers along with a mini blueberry pie from her favorite bakery. On the drive home I pictured Monroe's birthday last year. Her surprise party, Dex's proposal, and confessing my love to Monroe. A year ago today I would have never pictured myself living this perfect life. The year full of heart ache and loss but also filled with love and happiness. Reese and I were legally divorced by Christmas. She and Carter were to be married next week. We rarely ever had disagreements and I felt truly happy for her new found life. She and Monroe never mended their differences but Reese was still cordial to her for the sake of the children.
It was Reese's week with Sean and Ellie and I had plans for Becca to pick up the boys from school. I slowly walked into the front door and found Monroe washing dishes at the kitchen sink. Millie came running up to me. I leaned down, gave her a kiss on her forehead and put my finger over my mouth.
"Shhh, I'm going to surprise mommy."
Millie ran back to her doll house and my sights were glued to Monroe back in the kitchen.
She had Elton John on record and was swinging her hips to Candle in the Wind. She had a floral boho style beach dress on that flowed away from her body slightly. The kitchen window was open above the sink and was letting in the nice breeze of the May air. I came up from behind her.
"Kane, you know how I don't like being scared like that. You frightened me." she said having a hard time not smiling
With my right hand I flung the bouquet in front of her face and whispered in her ear.
"Happy Birthday."
While caressing her protruding belly with my left hand.
