It was late fall of my thirteenth year. My mother had asked me to walk to the local gas station after school. I sat outside in the crisp air on a picnic table bench. A breeze picked up and blew my thick brown hair across my face. I brushed it away casually. Sooner than later the sun began to set and the air became chillier. I soon thought my mom wasn't coming. I checked my watch. Yep, 5:33. School ended about an hour and a half ago. I stepped inside the store to wait. A woman was at the check-out counter. Her badge read, " Sandy, 5 Year Employee." She seemed nice so I approached her.

"Um, hi. My name is Nikki. My mom was supposed to pick me up here after school. She had told me she was going to be a little late, but not this late. Can I use the phone here?"

She handed me a flip phone.

"Here, just use mine."

"Thanks," I replied to her as she handed me the phone.
I called my mom's cell phone. It rang until it went to voicemail.

"No answer," I told her. "I guess I will try the home phone. She might have left her phone on silent."

"Okay, that's fine. Just let me know," she said with a smile.

It rang and rang again. Still no answer. I was starting to worry. I didn't show it though on my face.
"No answer...."
