Adrian stared at the ceiling of his small bedroom, thinking about how he was finally in his own place. Sure, it was a very small apartment, but Adrian didn't need much room. It was him all on his own now, out of the nest. He was excited, ready to see the city and do all the fun things he had heard about. Of course, his college courses came first. The reason he moved to New York in the first place was so that he could go to the amazing art school here. He rolled over and closed his eyes, ready to sleep. He had gotten comfortable and was just about to drift off...
And that's when he heard the sound of glass breaking.
He sat bolt upright, wondering what it was. He was a little dazed, and it took him a moment to collect his thoughts. He listened for another noise, but nothing came. Maybe I dreamed it? He thought. Adrian was going to go back to sleep when he heard a girl's voice, and it sounded like she was crying.
"Okay, I definitely didn't dream it." He said to himself. He couldn't quite make out what the girl was saying, but he could tell it was in the apartment directly above his. He got out of bed, wondering what was going on. He put on his shoes, made his way to the elevator and took it to the second floor. He walked down the hall until he found the apartment right apartment, 216.
At first, he was hesitant about knocking, worrying that it was an intrusion of privacy. He worked up the courage and managed to knock on the door. After a few seconds, a girl opened the door. She had black hair tied into a messy bun, brown eyes the color of chocolate and round, black glasses. She looked thin and pale, and wore an emerald green sweater that was zipped up to her chin. She also wore a black mask that covered her mouth.
"Y-yes? W-what do you n-need?" She asked shakily.
"Oh, well I just heard a noise and came-" He was cut off by the girl.
"You p-probably imagined i-it..." She said. It was hard to tell, but it looked like the girl was crying.
"Are you sure? I could have sworn I heard something..."
"I'm s-sure. It's a-awfully nice of you to c-care, sir, but I should g-go back i-inside." She said, she was halfway through closing the door when she stopped and looked at him. "It must have been the wind." With that, the girl shut the door.
Adrian was left standing out of the apartment, his gut telling him there was something else going on. With a sigh, he went back down to his own apartment.
The next day, Adrian thought about visiting the girl after he got done with his classes. He knew he had enough time, maybe he could invite her to go to Coney Island to cheer her up. Plus, he had always wanted to go to Coney Island so that was just a win-win. Class seemed to drag on that day, sure it was fun but he couldn't stop thinking about the noise he heard. His teacher, Ms. Kelly, seemed to have noticed, because she came over to him when the class started working.
"Adrian, are you alright? You seem to be really distracted."
"Hm? Oh, it's nothing. Just a little worried about, um, my cat Siren." That was a half lie, he did have a cat who was sick, but that's not what he was worried about.
"Oh? What's wrong with the poor thing?" Ms. Kelly asked, she loved animals and always wondered about everybody's pets.
"She's sick, I'm taking her to the vet soon." Adrian said. He felt bad lying to his teacher, but he didn't want to get a lot of people involved.
"Okay, well I hope she gets better." And with that, Ms. Kelly walked off to go observe the students' work.
After class, Adrian went back to his apartment building to drop off his stuff and see if he could get the girl to come to Coney Island. He got to her door and knocked on it. The girl opened up again, still wearing that same emerald green sweater and black mask.
"O-oh, hi." She said, surprised to see him standing there.
"Hi, um, I just wanted to properly introduce myself. I'm Adrian, Adrian Tyler." He held out his hand for her to shake. She heistantly shook it.
"I-I'm Ellyda Snow." She replied slowly. He let go of her hand.
"I just wanted to see if you maybe wanted to come to Coney Island? I've always wanted to go but I doubt it would be very fun by myself." He said, twiddling his thumbs.
"W-what a-about your f-friends?" Ellyda asked, looking behind her.
"I, uh, I don't have any here." Adrian replied sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck.
"W-well, I can't t-tonight." She said, "S-sorry." Then she shut the door.
