After the 10-minute drive thanks to the traffic they encountered, they have arrived to their destination. She stepped out of the car, along with her new family, as she looked up at the fancy glowing neon lights that spelled ‘La Regia’. Such a fancy restaurant, she thought. She glanced at a now sleeping Sans at the side of one of the building’s post, and promptly gave him a gentle shake to wake him up. He groaned, but stood up straight anyways. They came upon the maître d’ in order to occupy their reservation, but something went wrong.
The maître d’ quickly went inside the restaurant, and showed their manager the reservation slip. The manager gazed at the five monsters and two humans, before whispering something to their hostess. She went back to the waiting customers and sighed, “I’m very sorry to say that your reservation was due five minutes ago.”
“Five minutes? But we’re sure we arrived on time. See? Today is about 5:00 already.” explained Toriel, shoving the reservation slip, and her wristwatch. “I’m really sorry, but in behalf of our staff, I cannot allow you to come in unless you have a reservation.” their hostess said, worriedly. “But we did have a reservation!” exclaimed Chara, trying to start an argument, not until Asriel came by her side, holding her shoulder, “Come on. I’m sure we’ll find another way to fix this.”
Frisk glanced back at the restaurant to see human customers, enjoying their meals inside the dining hall. Not a single monster was seen, she noticed. What cruel discrimination! She wished she could speak up to defend her friends, but for goodness’ sake, she can’t. Not with the situation she’s in right now. She could feel her stomach rumbling from hunger, and thought of food, hot food to warm her up, that is. Hot food… An idea sparked up inside her. “Papyrus…” she suddenly spoke up, which surprised the others. “Wha…” said Chara, bewildered by the sound that actually came out of her mute sister. Her reaction was just the same with the others.
-------------------------------------------------------------
There it is again! The voice, and this time, everyone knows who it was because of the fact that she spoke up in front of them. Then there he noticed that the only word, or rather, name that came out of her soft pink lips was the name of his younger brother. Strangely, he felt a pang of jealousy inside him. Wait, he shouldn’t be feeling this. They’ve just met, they’re not even that close, and he has no idea what kind of person she’ll be. After all, they’ve only met yesterday. But most importantly, how the hell will she be friends with him, if she can’t even mutter how she feels. So there’s literally no chance of them being close enough.
He glanced at Frisk with white circles in his eye sockets, and noticed how she seemed to struggle in her thoughts. She wanted to tell them something, and the only person she could turn to is his brother, he guessed. And he’s exactly sure that he’s right about this.
-------------------------------------------------------------
‘How can I put it this way?’ she whispered in her thoughts. “OK, HUMAN. WHAT IS IT THAT YOU WANT TO SAY?” he asked, patiently. Did he really expect for her to answer that? She thought about this sentence as the question of the day. *‘Sorry, Pap. But I just can’t tell you all that we should all go to Grillby’s instead. If there is such a thing on the surface. Then again, I just can’t speak.’ she sighed in her thoughts. But what really surprised her was that Papyrus suddenly perked up.
“WHY YOU CAN! THAT’S A GREAT IDEA, HUMAN!”
Everyone stared at him, wondering why he suddenly said that. “Uh… I didn’t say anything?” shrugged Chara, eyeing at the tall skeleton. “Heh, what are you talking about, bro?” chuckled Sans. “WELL, THIS HUMAN,” he started, gesturing at Frisk, “IS SUGGESTING THAT WE COULD GO TO GRILLBY’S INSTEAD. BUT SHE’S A BIT SHY TO SAY THAT TO EVERYONE.” he explained, patting the girl on the back. Everyone was speechless. Even Frisk is dumbstruck. How come he knows what’s inside her head? ‘I didn’t even say it loud, because I really can’t.’ she breathed in her thoughts, ‘It’s all in my thoughts…’
“GEE, WHAT DO YOU MEAN, HUMAN? I COULD HEAR YOU LOUD AND CLEAR. ALTHOUGH IT IS QUESTIONABLE THAT YOU SPEAK WITHOUT USING YOUR MOUTH.” said Papyrus, holding up his chin. “Papyrus, who are you talking to?” asked Toriel, looking very worried. Did they think Papyrus is crazy? Because for once, Frisk may not believe it, but he’s actually responding to what she’d say in her thoughts!
“I’VE ALREADY TOLD YOU. I WAS TALKING TO THE HUMAN!” he exclaimed, flailing his hands in frustration. “But Papyrus, Frisk can’t talk. She’s mute, remember?” reminded Asriel, eyeing Frisk. “OK, THEN MAYBE, IT’S A NEW POWER OF MINE? TO READ THOUGHTS? AM I GUESSING RIGHT, HUMAN?” added Papyrus, motioning himself to face Frisk. The girl, on the other hand, nodded in agreement. He may be right about him reading her thoughts. But she thought only her thoughts.
“Well, I think that’s a good sign. After all, we needed someone who could read anyone’s thoughts. Through the bone, that is!” Sans said, chuckling at his bad pun. Only Frisk and Toriel giggled at this. The rest are groaning all the way to Grillby’s.
Even outside the diner, the smell of burger and fries floated right through the doors of the building. A sign that spelled out ‘Grillby’s’ is shown on top of its doors. ‘Grillby must be going pretty well.’ she whispered in her thoughts, noticing a lot of customers going in and out. “YES, HE IS. EVEN HUMANS COME AND GO HERE.” responded Papyrus.
“Maybe they thought how warmly he welcomes them.” whispered the shorter skeleton, winking which made the girl giggle silently. “I HEARD THAT.” Papyrus rolled his eyes in annoyance.
After entering the diner, it was a bit jam-packed, and the only seats available at the moment was right in front of the counter. Luckily, it is enough to seat all seven of them. The area may be crowded, but it was very lively, and everyone was having so much fun. Sans and Frisk ended up sitting beside each other, and as expected, they were the only ones silent, like back at the cafeteria.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Sans was used to the silence, as I have said, he considers it as music to his ears. Even with the loud surrounding, he’d somehow found a way to feel in silence. And that was perhaps Frisk. She, on the other hand, abhors the sound of silence. It made her feel alone. It reminds her of the cold void in which Chara had imprisoned her for so long. Could you imagine being in the void? Don’t even try going there!
Thankfully, the skeleton broke the deafening silence by asking, “Is ‘Papyrus’ really the only word you know?” he paused, thinking, “Cause if you’re really mute, why did you suddenly speak? Or is this just some kind of misunderstanding? Like you could talk, but just don’t know how to.” Certainly, the girl doesn’t even know how to respond to that, so she just turned her head no, and lets out a silent sigh.
“Let me rephrase that for you; you know how to speak; you just couldn’t let it out somehow?” he again asked. ‘Wow, impressive.’ thought Frisk, amazed by how the short monster quickly understood her ‘muted’ situation. So she nodded in reply.
“Ok…” he paused in deep thought, “Then try… Saying my name? If you can?” he dared. The human thought for a moment, and gazed at the skeleton in front of her, whose cheekbones are dusted in a light shade of blue after ‘accidentally’ blurting the dare. He must’ve realized what he just said, why else would he turn embarrassed? She only sighed, and mouthed ‘Ok, I’ll try.’
She took a deep breath. After that, she closed in the gap of her upper and lower set of frontal teeth. She began with a… “S…” is the sound that came out of her mouth. ‘Maybe she ain’t mute after all, I think she can do it.’ thought Sans, watching her closely. Unfortunately, that was it. She tried to do it again, but nay, the only thing that comes out is “S…”
His hopes of getting Frisk to talk quickly sank. “Well, at least you tried your best.” he sighed, a bit disappointed. Silence took over. But only for a moment…
‘I’m sorry, but I guess it seems that I really can’t do it, Sans.’ he heard someone whisper in his thoughts…

*Just to make things clear;
‘…..’ – means Frisk whispering through her thoughts,
“…..” – means speaking (Obviously)
Now, clear? Good.
