When Luke and Dawn took to the dance floor for their first dance everyone stopped talking for a moment and watched. He held her close and twirled her round the room.
Dawn saw Jace’s face at the back of the room. ‘What is he doing here? He wasn’t invited. Damn him.’
“Dawn, are you alright? You seem to be distracted. You keep standing on my toes.”
“Ohh Luke, I’m sorry. Just a little dizzy after the way you’ve been whirling me round the room. I guess I just lost my footing.”
“Sorry Dawn, let’s slow down and get the bridesmaids up now.”
Dawn beckoned to the bridesmaids and Chris immediately stood up and asked Annie to dance. They stepped onto the dance floor and Chris smiled at Annie as he pulled her into his arms.
“You can’t deny me this first dance Annie.” He winked. “It’s tradition, Best Man dancing with the Maid of Honour.”
Annie smiled and stood up.
“Chris… I’m really sorry… I never meant to hurt you.”
“Annie it’s okay. Let’s not go there right now. We are here to make Dawn’s day special so let’s just have a wonderful time.”
Annie smiled and relaxed in Chris’s arms. Yes she would forget every unhappy thought and just enjoy the day. She was rather surprised at how comfortable she felt dancing with Chris.
Chris couldn’t help feeling how perfectly Annie fitted into his arms. He loved the smell of her hair and the feel of her skin was so soft like silk. Maybe if he just became her friend and they saw each other often, just maybe …
His thoughts were interrupted by raised voices at the back of the marquee. James was having words with some guy he’d never seen before.
“Hey Annie do you have any idea who that guy is that James is shouting at?”
Annie looked across to where Chris was looking and was so surprised to see her brother. The argument looked heated.
“Chris, that’s my brother.”
“Oh, so he came with you?”
“No, he wasn’t invited. I have no idea what he is doing here.”
“Dawn didn’t invite your brother?”
“It’s complicated Chris and not something to get into now.”
The voices got louder as their argument became more intense.
“What the hell are you doing here Jace? I’m sure you weren’t invited.” James poked a finger in his chest.
“Hey don’t poke me. I’ve done nothing wrong.” Jace said taking a step back.
“Nothing yet and let’s keep it that way, so just turn around and leave before Dawn sees you.” James said stepping forward as Jace backed away.
“James, back off mate, you’re in my space.”
James stepped right up against Jace. “I’m not moving till you leave. You’re just here to cause trouble. Now go.”
“We’ll see how Dawn feels when she sees me and I’ll only leave if she tells me to.”
“Dawn is not going to make a scene in front of Luke, especially not on her wedding day.”
“That’s why I’m here.”
“What do you mean?” James said squaring up to Jace.
“She married the wrong man. She’s got feelings for me and if you’d just invited me over that night she definitely would not have been married to Luke now.”
