CALIFORNIA'S POV

The yellow eyes. The low snarls. The rotting skin. The splattered blood.
I bolted up in my bed, crying out, awakening from another terrible dream of my sister turning. It has been about a month since I arrived and since Hazel died, but she still haunted my thoughts.
I sat there panting in the darkness with my hands on my forehead.
I must have screamed pretty loud, because there was a knock on my cell door. I rolled out of bed as I tried to fix my hair and adjust the sweat pants Beth had let me wear.
I opened to door and there was Carl, wearing a dark tee shirt and plaid pajama bottoms. His hair pointed in different directions, and he was so cute with a bed head.
"You okay?" He said wearily.
"Yea. I'm fine." I looked down. "Just had a nightmare."
Apparently I was still trembling, because he gave me a worried look and walked into my cell, then sat on my bed and patted the spot next to him. I took a seat.
"Now, what was the dream about?" He said soothingly.
"My sister." I whispered. "She turned into one of them."
He nodded. "I have dreams, too. The bad ones. About my mom."
"What happened to your mom?" I said quietly.
"When we first came to the prison, she was pregnant with Judith. And one time, Mom, Maggie and I were being chased by walkers in a prison hallway. She started going into labor... We locked ourselves in a boiler room and we tried to deliver the baby. B-but something went wrong..." His voice faltered. "We had to cut open her stomach. I-I had to kill her after,"
I could barely see in the darkness, but I could make out his blue eyes welling up with tears.
"I'm so sorry, Carl," I comforted him.

I put my head on his shoulder and we talked about our past and what was important to us for awhile. Family, friends, life before.
All of a sudden he looked up at me.
"Will you be my girlfriend?" He asked.
I was speechless. Finally, my childhood crush liked me back!
"Yes!" I said happily. I found his hand in the darkness and we laced our fingers together.

CARL'S POV

YES! I thought to myself. California Teal was now my girlfriend. We can be together! What was everybody else gonna think about this? Who cares!
We snuggled a little, which was the best few minutes of my life, then we both yawned in unison.
"You should go to bed," she said.
"Yea. When are we gonna tell everybody about... Us?" I said, wiggling my eyebrows.
She laughed. "Tomorrow."
"Okay. Goodnight," I said before leaving her cell.
I walked into my cell room which was right next to her's and sat on my bed.
"Goodnight, mom." I whispered into darkness and fell asleep.
