“Monica! Monica! Monica!”
Struggling with trying to get the books out of my locker, I stopped everything as I heard Janet rushing to come to me. I wondered what was going on. Was she pregnant, again? Was someone trying to beat her up, again? Did she flunk another course, again? Was it all 3, again?
She reached, almost out of breath, but with a smile on her face. The news couldn’t have been that bad, but it was obviously pressing.
She started, “Remember when I told you about Terrell liking you two weeks ago?”
How could I forget? She hounded me for that entire day attempting to get me as excited as she was about the news. I returned to straightening my locker.
“Remember when he started to talk to you the day after?”
“Get to the point Janet. I have a class to get to.”
“He’s going to ask you out on a date today.”
She then proceeded to jump up and down while giving a squeal that would irritate flipper.
When Terrell came to talk to me that day, I was not overly excited. He talked to everyone, being the popular guy in school that he was. I won’t lie though. I kept my excitement in check. I was happy that he came and talk to me and hearing that he wanted to ask me on a date made me happy as well, but I was not going to show it to Janet. She was known for opening her mouth too wide and too much if you get my drift. Why I was friend with her would be a mystery to a lot of people, but we knew each other since the sand box. Unlike her, I was loyal to my friends.
I finished gathering my things and closed my locker. I turned and she stopped jumping, but she was smiling to no end, as if she was the one who was going to be asked out. She asked, “So, aren’t you excited?”
I smiled, politely, and said, “You’re one crazy bitch, Janet.”
I began to walk and she followed, not losing her smile. She talked and talked. She even followed me in my Biology class. That would not have been a problem if she was supposed to be in that class. She kept ranting and ranting about how great and nice it would be if Terrell and I were together and if we had kids together and how she wants to be my maid of honor and the godmother to my first baby.
Finally the teacher wanted to start her class and therefore kicked out Janet.
But it was too late. A seed had been planted in the subconscious of my mind and all I could wonder about was Terrell. Was Janet right or was it just some rumor that she had concocted to feel important, again?
The remainder of my day went out like a blur. My mind was so clouded with what Janet had said. I remembered when Terrell first approached. He was so sure of himself, and yet so charming. I had guys come on to me every now and then. None of them made me feel emotions like Terrell did. He first approached me as if we had been friends for years. Then slowly, but surely, he started flirting and before I knew it, I began to flirt back.
So when Janet approached me and told me the news, I became anxious and waited. He had my phone number at home and he knew most of my classes.
It looked like he decided to make his move after school.
I was making my way to the bus stop and in order to do so, I had to cross the school parking lot. I was literally in the middle of the parking lot when he caught up with me taking hold of my hand.
I turned and smiled at his little peach fuzz that was growing on his chin. His brown skin looked great in this spring sun and for his young age, his face looked as chiselled as Tyson Beckford and by the way his clothes fitted him, I could bet that he was just as built.
“Monica, I’ve been looking for you all day.”
I smiled and said, “I was in school.”
“Look, what are you doing tomorrow night?”
I didn’t want to act desperate and I tried to play it cool, so I’m sure I said that I didn’t have anything planned. If my face looked like I had won the lottery though, I had no control over that.
He laughed and said, “I was wondering if you’d be down to get something to eat and maybe catch a movie."
This was just like the movies and I was going to give the same answer as the girls at the movies.
“Are you asking me out, Terrell?”
His smile was my answer. My blushing was my acceptance to his request. He said, “I’ll come and pick you up at 8?”
I bit my lower lip, smiling and nodded at him. He said running back towards the school, “I have to run to basketball practice. I’ll see you tomorrow though.”
I just watched as he left and smiled. Without Janet around, I could day dream and enjoy this fairy tale like type of moment. I didn’t need to be dealing with enchanted apples or wicked witches. Just him asking me out was my fairy tale story. I was happy. I continued day dreaming and looking at him running towards the school until a car blew its horn at me.
