Lazily, I rested my head in my hands as I sat over the front desk. My eyes scanning around the empty museum. I squinted slightly unable to stay awake.
My night shift was really getting the better of me recently. I looked over at the multiple pieces of jewellery and imagined how I would look with them over my body. The diamond, sparkly necklace always caught my eye as it sat alone enclosed behind a thick piece of glass. What a lonely life that necklace must have.
"Lyra I didn't know sleeping was part of your job." Jayden spoke from beside me making me jump and almost fall out my chair. His head also resting on his part of the desk next to me. I rolled my eyes at his smug face before sitting back in the chair and stretching out.
"Yeah well I didn't realise it would be so boring." I yawned, rubbing my eyes, desperately trying to stay awake.
When I had taken the job as a security guard I was expecting it to be some exciting job you see in the movies where you would be tackling burglars to the floor...but I soon found out it really wasn't.
"Girl it's not that boring...we have a TV!" He said sarcastically pointing to the small TV inside the locker room that looked like it was atleast a hundred years old. "Anyway girl my shifts almost over so I'll have to love you and leave you."
He jumped up from his chair giving me another sarcastic grin. I sighed and gave a small smile before slapping his arm as he disappeared into the back.
I checked my watch. 1:03am. Time in this place seemed to never end. I had definitely enjoyed the silence at first because it allowed me to think, but after awhile it just became creepy. Even the smallest of sounds seemed to make me jump. First it was the buzzing of the overhead lights and then it was the occasional cracks of the radiators.
But above all I missed my son, Alex. He was the only thing keeping me going anymore to be honest and everything I did was for him. Alex's father had left before he was born, which to be honest I was glad about because he was not the type of man you would want around your children.
My parents always told me that when I had children I'd know what they meant when they said you'd do anything for them. That was something I always remembered about them; their unconditional love and advice. They died in a car accident when I was 14. I still remember the police coming to my house...it was all a blur now to be honest. I had tried to block out that part of my life as much as I could.
Sighing, my eyes followed a small fly that flew around the bright lights littered across the room. How the fuck did my life get this boring? I always thought I would do something interesting with my life. Maybe be an astronaut or a pilot. Actually I never really much liked flying so I'd probably rather die than have that job. Ever since my parents died I honestly had lost all inspiration. I guess you could say I was depressed but honestly who the fuck knows these days.
"Fuck!" I called out, my voice echoing around the museum, bouncing aimlessly off the walls until it diminished into silence once again. Without another thought, I grabbed the remote from under the desk and forced myself up and towards the TV. Maybe I could imagine my life away, wishing I was living a fantasy life like you see in movies.
"And once again one of the most wanted men in America has been sighted." A dull looking woman spoke through the screen, her eyes staring directly at me as I sat back and swivelled my chair around. "He was last seen in Chicago..."
Chicago? Shit! When did anything ever happen in Chicago? It had been the most boring city to grow up in yet here this women was claiming the most wanted man in America was in boring Chicago.
"If you see a man that fits this image..."
I spun the chair back round to be met with a large picture of a man with dark curly hair and bright eyes that seemed to pierce through me. Damn. Well the most wanted man was definitely attractive that's for sure.
