Chapter 1: If This Is A Dream, Someone Please WAKE ME UP!
"Attention passengers please fasten your seatbelts. The plane will begin descending in 5 minutes."
The flight attendants were scurrying across the cabin like ants in a chocolate cake trying to fulfill every passenger's last request before landing in the international airport of Paris. We have been planning this big move for months now, and the time finally came to move from beautiful Houston, Texas to Paris, France. My parents got transferred to Paris, so now my brother and I are stuck moving to a whole country in the middle of the school year. As the plane began descending my family became more and more excited.
My dad nudged me and whispered "Isn't this exciting, sweetie? We finally get to see Paris!"
My family had waiting for this day ever since they heard the news. From behind my seat I could hear the faint giggles from my brother and mom.
"Mommy mommy look. It's the Awful Tower!"
" It is the Eiffel Tower sweetheart." Out of the blue, I felt a hand on my shoulder. My mother was reaching over the seat. "Oh my gosh! This is amazing! It's like a dream, isn't it Trina?"
"Well if this is a dream, can you please wake me up mom?" I said enforcing my attitude.
My mother's face hardened. "Now Katrina, this is a new place and a new beginning for you. So I want you to drop the attitude. How would you like to be grounded on your first day in the most amazing city in all of Europe?"
I gave an irritated look and replied, "Well mom, you may call it amazing, but I call it a living nightmare!" Her upper lip was now quivering with rage.
"Katrina DO NOT test me! I mean it! I will ground you!" my hand now clenched into a fist.
"So ground me, I don't care! I don't even want to move to this stupid city! I'm going to miss out on all of the junior activities! And Katie's slumber party! I finally get invited to a slumber party and we move to France!!!" Moms face went from rage to sorrow in an instant.
"Sweetie, I know that you're upset, but think about it. You could make new friends here...maybe meet a nice boy!"
"MOM! NOTHING IS GOING TO CHANGE MY MIND ABOUT THIS CITY!!!" After that, we were silent for the rest of the plane ride!
Not too long after the argument, the plane landed. It was 7:34 pm or as the French say 19:34. Very different considering that back home it was 1:34 pm.
"Trina, come on the car is ready." Dad was already behind the wheel of a Cherry Red Camaro car that he had picked out online a couple days ago. Right next to dad stood a tall thin man with brown hair that was beginning to gray at the top of his head; his eyes were the brightest brown that I had ever seen, and his smile was very wide. Right next to him stood a petite woman in a blue blouse with black dress pants. Her hair was honey mist auburn and went perfectly with her light brown eyes. From the way she and my mother were laughing and chatting, I knew that I would be seeing more of her. Staring at the strangers, I didn't notice the boy from behind until he touched my arm.
"Bonjour! Accueillir en France. mon nom est Vincent Jacquet." He had a huge smile on his face, but when he didn't hear me respond to him he began to laugh. "hahaha! I take it you do not know much French yet, yes? My name is Vincent. Welcome to France. I am your new neighbor. My family is right over there talking to your parents. So, Who do I have the pleasure of addressing?" After about 30 seconds of silence it finally clicked in my brain.
"Oh! My name is Katrina, but everyone just calls me Trina." He took my hand and kissed it, which made my cheeks turn bright red. Vincent was tall and thin, with dark brown hair and eyes. He looked to be around the same age as me. There was an awkward silence between us and the only thing I could think to say was, "um... so you in live in Paris???" What was I thinking! Of course he lives in Paris, he's my neighbor!
