Chapter 1: A job well done
Ever since that dreadful Halloween, the band had kept shelter inside their refugee tent. For their safety, the two ice jackals guarded their tent to keep out any intruders. Gyrin had decided to live in the tent with Jeremy and his friends until Winter arrived.
Grayson wasn't in the tent with the band. She was being punished by Slasher to dig scrapes in the ground. It was sunny outside, but as the hours went on, it soon grew dark. The opossum was sweating and was almost out of breath. "Please, Slasher!" she begged. "No more! I've been working all day and night! Can't I take another break?!" "No!" hissed Slasher. "You're being punished! Do as I say!"
"But what about my class?" asked Grayson. "You've been dropped!" said Slasher. "You're no longer in that class!" "Why?!" asked Grayson. "Chad is in the class! You can't get rid of me!" "Grayson, I did," Slasher said in a firm voice. "The way you've behaved in the past month has been abysmal! I can't stand having you in the class anymore!" "But I patrol the outskirts!" complained Grayson. "So can Chad!" said Slasher. "All you do is complain and whine about food! You're always hungry!"
"I can't help it!" whined Grayson. "I'm always hungry. So I hunt while patrolling. I can't hunt on an empty stomach!" "Then eat the food that the chefs prepare!" said Slasher. "Patrolling is for those who listen to the instructor not their stomach! From now on, you're expelled from this class! I don't want to hear another word out of you!"
Grayson felt her heart sink to the ground. "Oh please, Slasher!" begged Grayson. "If I don't join Patrolling, how can I become a Guardian?!" "You won't ever be a Guardian if you continue to act like this!" hissed Slasher. "Killing woodland critters is a disgrace. Especially ones that live in a forest! Killing the living is illegal!" "What about the dinosaurs?!" asked Grayson. "They eat what's prepared by the chefs," corrected Slasher. "Outside foods are what they eat. And so should you!"
"What if I ate before class?" asked Grayson. "I've made my decision!" said Slasher. "You're not in the class anymore! I don't want to hear another word! Now finish your work!"
Grayson's eyes welled up with tears. Slasher looked away from her. "Tears won't get you anywhere," said Slasher. "What can I do to change your mind?" asked Grayson. "I'll do whatever you want! Anything!" "No more chances," said Slasher. "Now the council is going to decide on another class for you. Quit begging!"
"But I want to patrol!" begged Grayson. "I want to make you proud!" "Make me proud by finishing the work I assigned for you!" said Slasher. "Then you'll let me back in the class?" asked Grayson. "NO!" roared Slasher. "Please! Please! I want to rejoin the class! It's not fair!" wailed Grayson. "Get back to work!" roared Slasher.
Sadly, Grayson drooped her ears down and resumed working. Slasher shook his head and turned away from Grayson. He couldn't allow for Grayson to rejoin the class. She would continue to kill more woodland critters and disobey the rules given by him. Even the classmates had complained about her and couldn't stand having her in the class anymore.
Finally, Slasher sighed and called for Grayson. "Get over here!" he said to Grayson. The opossum went over to Slasher. "Are you going to bring me back?" asked Grayson. "Stop it!" said Slasher. "That's not why I called you here!" "Then why did you call me here?" asked Grayson. "I called to tell you that you're done for the night and this is going to be your job from now on!" said Slasher.
"What?!" asked Grayson. "No! Patrolling is what I want! I don't want to dig holes for animals to store food!" "SOOO! You refuse to help others?" asked Slasher. "It will be like that if you don't let me back in the class!" said Grayson. "Now you have no choice but to accept me back!" "Giving me the ultimatum eh?" asked Slasher. "I don't want this!" said Grayson. "I just want to go back to class! In fact I'll be joining the group tonight! Just you wait!" She made her way out of the forest. "That girl!" growled Slasher. "I can't stand her!"
