Hermione had always liked the silence. She could swim through an ocean of her thoughts for hours spent in silence. There were only three places in Hogwarts that she could get this kind of peace. Her bedroom, which was currently occupied by her roommates at the moment, chatting about the new Quidditch players trying out for the team. The Room of Requirement, which Hermione knew she could get in trouble if she really wanted to. And the library.
Madam Pince was now accustomed to Hermione's presence in the library. She had taken familiarity since Hermione was the only Gryffindor in the room, often wondering why the young witch didn't end up in Ravenclaw. The brunette always had stacks of books spread across her table every day. And that day was not an exception.
Hermione was busy writing a ten foot essay homework they had with Professor Snape. It wasn't because she wanted to finally get into the Professor's good side by making a great impression on the first Dark Arts class she had with the professor. But she was also adamant to finish before noontime so she could give some pointers to Harry and Ron.
In the back of her head, Hermione admitted she was not 100% focus at the moment. She just couldn't stop thinking about a certain Slytherin with her stupid pretty face and her stupid beautiful smile.
Did she just think of that?
Hermione still couldn't forget their first interaction yesterday in their Potions class. How being a muggle born didn't affect the Slytherin girl was all too good to be true. The brunette shrugged herself away from the thought. One wrong move and she could write Samantha's name in the essay. And that would be a disaster.
They're plotting against me, Hermione thought. Draco and Sam. Draco knows he cannot mess with me more than a girl can. And now he has his sister to finish the deed.
"Hey! What are you doing?" Sam's voice literally surprised Hermione, her shoulders suddenly became stiff. Out of all the people in Hogwarts to appear before her, why Sam?
There were a couple of students from Ravenclaw house who turned their heads their way, probably annoyed by the sudden noise.
Sam casually took a seat in front of Hermione, like they were close friends. Friends.
Hermione licked her lips nervously as she flashed the essay before Sam.
"Oh, okay," Sam said, as she grabbed a couple of books from her bag. "Professor Snape can be really tough sometimes... Well, don't mind me then... I'm just gonna read some stuff for class later."
Hermione glared at the books and then at Sam, who was sporting that silly beautiful smile. Then she went back to write, ignoring those piercing eyes before her and that familiar feeling in her stomach.
What was I writing right now? Oh, about Occlumency. Please focus, Hermione.
The silence deepened when Sam started to read. Hermione tried to get a glance at what Sam was reading but the book seemed old with no title on the front.
Hermione decided to let Sam read peacefully and settled on the fact that Draco and his boys wouldn't come barging in any minute. Surely, Madam Pince would not allow such a prank in her territory.
But Hermione couldn't find herself to concentrate. She looked at her essay and it seemed that she had only added three or four sentences since Sam arrived.
"Did you know that there's actually a map of Hogwarts?" Sam said out of nowhere, her eyes glued at the book she was reading. "And in that map, you can find secret passageways and rooms."
Hermione's eyes darted to stare at her, then she went back to whatever the hell she was doing. No, she won't be distracted like this.
"You're awfully quiet, you know that?" Sam continued, smirking as she did so. "I mean, you're active and usually loud in class."
Then Hermione put down her parchment and hissed at Sam in a low voice. "I don't know if you could tell, but we're in a library."
Sam smiled and Hermione felt something strange about her smile, as if she was lifted from her feet. She quickly shook herself from it.
"Okay, sorry," Sam said, zipping her lips with her fingers. Then she stayed silent for a good minute.
When Hermione returned back to her writing, Sam suddenly whispered, "I found one."
Found what? Hermione couldn't help but wonder so she looked questioningly at Sam.
Sam could see Hermione was curious so she went on. "Map of Hogwarts."
No. It couldn't be. I know Harry has a map. Hermione thought. Did Sam steal it from Harry then? But how? Or maybe there are maps other than Harry's?
"Where did you find it?" Hermione asked, her curiosity got the best out of her. One question wouldn't hurt.
"I didn't exactly find it. Well, I know someone who has one," Sam explained.
"Harry?" And when Hermione said Harry's name, she knew she was in trouble.
"Harry has a map?" Sam asked, her eyebrows furrowed in confusion.
"I mean, Harry probably is looking for me," Hermione quickly amended, as she hurriedly folded her essay into her bag and stood.
Hermione could tell Sam's eyes were following her as she walked towards the exit. She felt relieved, to be honest. But she also felt guilty. Why am I avoiding her? She was just trying to start a conversation. She was just trying to be a friend.
But she's a Malfoy.
