It was a stormy weather the day after the match between Slytherin and Gryffindor. Most of the students stayed indoors when the trip to Hogsmeade was postponed due to bad weather.
Sam had never been to Hogsmeade. It would have been her first trip on that very day. But the girl felt kind of relieved since she was still sore from the game yesterday.
Quidditch was no joke. Although, it may seemed a lot safer than Quodpot, it was still challenging just the same, especially when all the players fought like their lives depended on it.
If she could just be honest to herself, she was a bit distracted by a certain brunette on the bleachers that day.
She decided to join the Gryffindor table during breakfast. Due to Harry and Ron's persistent invitation the night before, she couldn't say no. Plus, if Hermione was also going to be there, who was she to pass up on the chance.
Around the small portion of the table they occupied, Sam could only familiarize some of the faces. There was Ron, of course. Harry. Harry's girlfriend, Ginny. Luna, a Ravenclaw, who spends so much time with them. Neville. And Hermione.
Sam didn't get a chance to talk to Hermione after the game. She couldn't tell why Hermione was upset. Gryffindor won the game yesterday by 10 points just because Harry got to the Golden Snitch first before her brother, Draco.
Knowing she was only pushing her luck, she hesitantly took a seat beside Hermione and grabbed a plate of bacon. Ron and Harry greeted her. Luna, Neville and Ginny followed. But Hermione only ignored her. And to be honest, Sam could sense something was wrong.
"That was some game yesterday, huh, Harry," Sam began, lifting the atmosphere up. "You guys were amazing. I had fun."
"Yeah, it was," Harry said back cheerfully after he gulped down some pumpkin juice. "You were so great too, Sam! And to say that you've never played Quidditch that long."
"Well, you were better."
"Oh, c'mon, those sick moves....," Ron chimed in. "Where did you learn all that? I mean... Harry got lost on how to win last round. Ginny had to take over."
Harry laughed. And as they began to talk randomly about Quidditch and America, Hermione abruptly stood, beginning to leave.
"You're finished with your breakfast, Hermione?" Luna asked, glancing at Hermione's half-empty plate.
Hermione didn't answer. But only nodded. Ginny pulled Hermione's sleeve to make her stay but Hermione insisted.
"Hermione, hey, it's a Sunday," Sam said. "And it's still morning..."
"Are we just going to avoid the fact that you threw a bludger towards Ginny?!" Hermione blurted out, her nostrils flared up.
Everyone fell silent. Neville dropped his treacle tart and stared absentmindedly between Hermione and Sam.
So she was upset about that. But anyone could do that. At some point in the game, Sam swore one of Gryffindor's Chasers did that. I don't see her getting mad at her own house.
Sam broke the silence, half-smiling, "Hermione... it's... it's just a game."
Hermione rolled her eyes at her. And she began shoving her books into her bag.
"Ginny, right?" Sam said, turning to Ginny then to Harry for help.
"Yeah, Hermione, honestly, it's not a big deal," Harry added. "It's just a game."
"Hermione, it's normal for two rival teams to get riled up during a match," Ginny said. "But no hard feelings. Like what Sam said, it's just a game."
But Samantha knew the brunette wasn't particularly mad for that reason.
Sam gently placed her hand over Hermione's, just to reassure her that whatever it was she was feeling, it was okay, but the latter quickly yanked her hand away, as if the touch burned her. "Why us, Sam? Why me?"
What?
"What?" Sam asked, dumbfounded. She wasn't sure where Hermione was leading to.
"Why are you sitting here with us when you can be sitting there with them?!" Hermione exclaimed, pointing at the Slytherin table. Some of the Slytherin students heard the commotion. Draco, as well.
"But... But I wanna be friends with you guys... I want to be friends with you... and not them-"
"Really? Or was it all just for a show? Following me in the library? Taking up Ancient Runes?"
"Hermione, that's enough-" Ginny said, grabbing her shoulder to make her stop.
Hermione only shrugged her off. "I'm through with your brother and his sick jokes. And I'm certainly not going to be falling for yours."
And with that, she began to walk away. Sam attempted to stop her. "Hermione, l-"
Turning back, Hermione glared at Sam like she'd explode any minute if she wouldn't let her go away.
"I don't know what jokes you're trying to play with your brother and... and his evil sidekicks... but you're messing with the wrong person, Sam... stop following me like a mad sick puppet."
And with that, Hermione finally left, leaving a speechless and confused Sam on her seat.
Ouch. That had got to hurt.
Sam knew she was pushing it too far. Either party would soon realize that this wouldn't end well. She avoided looking at her own house's table, knowing her brother would sport that look i-told-you-so.
But for what it was worth, she really believed Hermione was different. That she could see through her being a Slytherin. Of being a Malfoy.
She couldn't be anymore wrong.
"I'm sure she woke up on the wrong side of her bed, Sam-" Ron broke the awkward silence.
"Ron!" Ginny shut him up. Then she squeezed Sam's arm, bringing the latter back from her thoughts.
"Sam, are you okay?"
Sam tried to muster a smile as she replied that she was all good. Then they went back to their conversation and continued to eat their breakfast. Like nothing happened.
But, deep inside, frustration and sadness still filled Samantha.
It's okay. It's going to be okay. If she didn't want to be her friend, then she'd let her be.
