Everyone is given half of a symbol at birth. The other half is given to your Soulmate when they are born. No one knows who their soulmate is, but everyone seems to find them. This has been the way for hundreds of years, once the government had discovered that people were terrible at finding a partner on their own. They were getting married too young, not lasting, the divorce rates were too high. The government needed to step in. No one really understands how the symbols are accurate if they are given out so early, but it has created some of the most successful marriages.
I don't really know how marriage worked before, but I like to believe that this system is better. Momma says it's always better to agree. So I do. I haven't really been able to venture out and look for my soulmate or anyone really.
Being ten, I'm supposed to focus on school and taking care of my pet turtle, Wyoming. Friends and love come later. They need to be found. Knowledge needs to be applied. I need to figure it out: who can be trusted, who fits, who would be good for me.
This is all what the government has figured out how to control. They know who fits with who in what crowd. They have taken the stress out of the decision making. That's at least what everyone says. All that's left is trusting that they know best. That what they teach will help us understand. And that they are making the right choices for us.
