First Aid

We slept in cars that night. There was nowhere better to sleep, and Michael couldn't travel very fast. In fact, he could hardly travel at all. When Sam had said it wasn't bad, it made me wonder how much worse he'd seen before. Because as far as I could tell, Michael wasn't doing too hot.

His shirt had soaked through with blood, and everytime that Abby looked over at him she would start crying all over again. Clarke was holding her, attempting to keep the young girl from looking at her only family, and keeping her calm. Well, as calm as she could.

We'd had to search through the cars to find something, anything but our own clothes, to bind him up. Sam had thankfully informed us that the bullet had gone straight through, hitting mostly muscle and no major organs. Which was good, it meant he had more of a chance.

Trish had struck gold and found a rather large first aid kit in a little Honda car. The only other things that the car held though was a tool kit, a roadside kit, and a thing of oil. It looked like this person had either packed lightly, and taken their belongings with them on foot, or hadn't known what was going on at all. I had mentally voted for the first option, not liking the sounds of the second.

The first aid kit included a bunch of gauze and some more medicine, which Sam took charge with and dressed Michael's wounds while offering him more little pills. I found myself reveling inside over the fact that Sam was who he was, and was able to offer the medical support that we needed. If it had been up to me, I don't know what I would have done in his shoes.

We walked as far and as fast as we could with Michael. It was hard because he couldn't really be carried, so he walked between Adam and Ben who offered their support to him. It was slow going. Michael tried to keep up but his wounds still pained him despite the medicine he'd taken for it. Sam stopped us for one reason or another, but mostly for Michael, and had us rest. Or search more cars.

We hadn't found any more guns but Trish had found a few knives and the others had made do in finding weapons. I was grateful that I still had mine. We ran into a few zombies along the way, and I took care of them mostly. Climbing on top of cars to get a vantage. The others took care of those that got too close to our group as we had put Abby and Michael inside of the car and surrounded it.

I was sitting on top of a van that Clarke had taken the seats out of with another tool kit in another car. Michael and Abby, along with Sam and Ben in the front seats, were all inside. The others had taken residence in other cars, and we had a small fire going between them all.

It wasn't quiet time to take watch, but I'd positioned myself on top of the van anyways. I had one of the benches from the van on top of it with me, facing away from the fire so that I could sleep, but be ready to defend at a moment's notice. Beck and Ben had put the seat on top of the van for me.

"Kodi," someone said from the fire side of the van.

I turned in my seat and wasn't surprised to find Adam looking up at me.

"We found some water bottles, come get a shower."

Instead of responding, I climbed down the van and jumped to the pavement next to him. He flashed me a smile, his blue eyes lit up by the firelight. He gestured with his hands for me to go first.

"Ladies first," he said and I rolled my eyes at him, smiling back. "Woah," he said, "you look creepy with the fire and the blood and the smile."

I lost the smile, remembering that I had Michael's blood still on my face. Adam tilted his head, "Hey now, we'll get that cleaned up. C'mon."

I didn't realize I'd left my bow behind until I'd already walked past the fire and Adam was walking close behind me. I let it go, deciding that I probably wouldn't need it. We walked past the car Trish had claimed for herself and to the truck Beck had decided to sleep in the bed of.  I hoped it didn't rain, for both of our sakes.
