There's a chill in the air as I'm walking towards everyone else. Five pairs of eyes watching me; they're all giving me exasperated looks, waiting for me to fix it, hoping that I have a trick up my sleeve. In contrast to the world around us, it's pin-drop silence. I just look down in shame; I don't know what to tell them, and I'm honestly at a loss of words. We lost.
--4 Months Before--
Veronica's POV
I was woken up by my dumbass alarm that decided it was time for me to get up. I was about to snooze it, but then I heard glass shattering downstairs. "Dammit dad", I mumble as I get up to stretch and put on my house shoes. I run down the stairs as fast as I can (like I've been doing since I was a little kid) and slide into the dining room.
I'm greeted by my dog Rayj jumping up on my legs. I lean down to pet him, but I can feel his whole body shuddering. I look up and see my dad laying faced down on the table, breathing hard. I walk up to him slowly and put my hand on the back of his bald head. He sits up abruptly and looks at me. I can smell the Heinekin and Gin on his breath and his eyes are bloodshot. "Veronica, that dumbass dog went in that garbage again; he had the nerve to try to run from me". I look back at Rayj and he just tilts his head at me in a 'what else was I supposed to do' way.
I sigh and sit on the loveseat, "Dad how much did you drink?", I say. There's no reply because he passed out. After rolling my eyes in irritation, I put some food and water in Rayj's bowls and went back to my room.
Opening my door, I turn on the light and jump back in my covers. My phone blares right in my ear, symbolizing that I'm getting a call. "Hello?" I answer. "BITCH get up, I'm finna be on my way, we finna get high" was the greeting I received from my best friend Reason. Before I can even reply, her goof ass hangs up. "Ugh!" I groan. Getting up, I grab some leggings from my drawer and hoodie hanging on the chair and I go into the bathroom.
I came out in a better mood after taking my morning shit. I heard honking and loud music, so I hurried up and put on my shoes and jacket and left the house.
Getting into Reason's car, the first thing I smell is weed. A paper ball is thrown into my lap, "here break this weed down" was all she said before pulling off my curb and taking off. I open the wrapped up paper and see clumps of dope. I look at her as my mouth curls into a grin, "girl you know I don't do that shit". She laughs and bangs her hand on the steering wheel. Our laughs die down and she turns up the radio.
Pulling up to school 45 minutes later, both of us were high as hell. I stumble out the car and get my perfume out as she does the same with her lotion. I spray my hair and my body down then switch with her. After rubbing lotion on my hands, I throw it back to her and we start walking into the school. Upon going through security checks, we go our separate ways; her with her friends from grammar school and me with my nerd friends.
I see the said nerd friends sitting at a round table in homeroom. I sit in the only open seat at the table and say hey to everyone. My diary, Remmè, looks up from his phone and gives me and a wide smile "hey gay female half" he says. I open my mouth to return his bright greeting but I am interrupted by our friend Rashad, who puts his arm around me. "Stop calling her gay, Veronica is only straight, for me," he said with a devious smile.
I roll my eyes at his antics but still crack a smile. "You're right Rashad, all for you" and I pucker my lips, insinuating a kiss. His eyes widen but he doesn't hesitate to lean forward. Right before our lips touch, I turn my head so my hair can smack him in the face. The whole table bursts out laughing and I sport my own few giggles in there. Salty, he pouts and sits back in his seat.
Right on time, our homeroom teacher, Mr. James, saunters in and puts his briefcase on his desk. The class quiets down as we await whatever he has to say so we can go to the first period.
"How are you guys feeling today?" He said with raised eyebrows.
There was a series of mumbles and groans throughout the room. We are all on the edge of our seats to find out who got the spots in the new Media class. The class just opened up but it is highly selective. Rumor has it, everybody who took that class had their creative dreams come true.
He gave a brief chuckle then his facial expression turned stern. "I have received the list of names that qualified to be transferred to the multimedia class. The six students selected were Remmè Vanýlla, Lake Tenähj, Veronica Denali, Aiden Friars, Cyfier Sahriun, and Alluly Caprice."
My heart dropped as I heard my name. Holy Shit. I got in the class. I'm in so much shock that Remmè's slap across my face didn't hurt. "BITCH WE GOT IN" he shouts in my face. Reality hits me as we are all asked to see him after class. The rest of the class was a blur.
After class Mr. James congratulated us and told us the room number to go to the highly complex and prestigious class. On the way to the Media class, Remmè just chatted about some cute guy he saw in the elevator at his mom's job. I, on the other hand, took the time to see the other 4 people that got selected.
I recognized one as Aiden Friars, one of the nerds Remmè and I be hanging around. He's probably one of the most dorky people I know, but in his head, he's more of a jockey guy. Hmm, he's not ugly, I think.
Next I see a shy-looking middle eastern girl hanging in the back of our little ensemble. Or maybe she's Arabic? Indian? Muslim? Aren't they all the same? Screw it, middle eastern. I think her name is Alluly or something like that. Total babe, but way too oblivious for her own good, so people just use her or ignore her.
Behind her is Cyfier Sahriun bobbing his head to whatever was playing on his headphones. Sort of an enigma, but he's nice to everyone and he's lowkey smart. It's no surprise he got picked for this class. Everyone says he's so innocent, but I get a different vibe from him. I see that playful glint in his eye when he interacts with females. Just because he hasn't been seen doing anything, doesn't mean he's innocent.
I pause for a moment looking for the other person but I only see five people, counting myself. As if right on cue, a figure steps out of Mr. James' class and starts to head in our direction.
The girl has a certain smug saunter with a cool and calm expression. Damn she fine as hell. I must've been staring because Remmè nudges me with his elbow. "Damn, earth to Vee, you good girl?". I nod as I glance back at the girl. He looks in the direction I'm gazing at, sees her, then rolls his eyes. "Who is she?" I ask.
"That's Lake Tenähj. She's cool as hell but sort of a mystery" he tells me. A smirk instantly finds its way to my mouth. "Oh yeah? I'm finna solve this mystery".
She finally catches her way up to us and she comes to a stop where we are. "Why are we stopping? Class is about to start" she asks. I take the liberty to answer and say "Well actually, we were waiting on you". She shrugs and says "Oh, my fault, I had to ask Mr. James something. We can keep going".
I hold out my arm to keep her from moving forward. "Woah woah, hold on, what's your name?" I say in a teasing voice. She raises an eyebrow at me but still answers "I'm Lake." Before I can tell her my name, a voice cuts in, "Hey, you're in my Political Writing class, aren't you?" Remmè says to her. Her gaze remains on me for a moment before she turns to him with a small smile, "Yeah Yeah, I think so, Remmè, right?" He smiles back at her and winks "Yeah that's me."
Alluly interrupts "Um can we go to the class now, I really don't want to be late and get my seat in the class revoked."
Lake and I make eye contact, but I break it to acknowledge Alluly. "Yeah for sure, my bad, come on y'all" I say and we walk to the class. I thought the class would be full based on how hard it was to get in here, but it was only 6 chairs in the room. They all were empty and put in a circle format.
The energy in the room shifted as we walk in towards the seats. Cyfier took off his headphones and sat down with the rest of us. It's quiet as we look around for an instructor, only to find nothing. We all look at each other in confusion and curiosity.
None of us know what to expect from this class, but I feel the vibe, and I know that from here on, something's going to change..
