AILEEN RIVERS

October 23, 2247

It was mid Autumn, the October of 2247, and the climate was dropping a few degrees every day. The forest around me whirled, making slight swooshing sounds and the cold wind stung my cheeks, making them appear a rosy pink in contrast to my light gray blue eyes. As I sat on our special boulder that overlooked the calm ocean waves rippling, I wondered if I would ever come back to this place again. I sighed, my attention on the beautiful blue gray waves that splashed onto the rocks of Boston, and the beautiful orange red sky that was just making the transition from day to dusk. I was entranced by the clouds that drifted pass, the dripping golden ball also known as the sun. Usually I would appreciate the immense beauty of this place, but I couldn't bring myself to think of that, especially since I was meeting Adrien, by best friend since birth for the last time...

Thinking of it, the only reason why I actually truly enjoyed it here apart from the nice view was because of him. Deep in thought, I didn't even realize someone sitting next to me until the voice next to me said, "Beautiful, isn't it?"

I didn't realize Adrien sitting here until I turned around. I laid my head on his shoulder. Sometimes I don't even know what Adrien is to me. A best friend, a brother, or perhaps a lover? I could never make up my mind, but for as long as I know, he was always there, next to me, and that's all that matters. Until I got the news that we were moving to New California, to the Legion, before the war started, and we couldn't move anymore. It was supposedly because of Mom and Dad's job but I think that there was more that than I thought. But now, here I was, forced to say goodbye to him for once and for all.

Adrien noticed me stiffen under his head, and abruptly turned his head to me.

"Hey, love, what's wrong?" Adrien said softly. He used the nickname he created a long time ago to call me. It was because of my name's first two letters Ai, that Adrien discovered Ai was Pinyin for Old Chinese, of love.

I sucked in a deep breath, and looked directly at him. At this time, I was trying desperately to hold back tears. I looked into his golden orbs filled with concern and an expression that I couldn't exactly make out, and I mustered the courage to tell him.

"Ian, I'm moving. Permanently." I whispered. I couldn't bear to look at his face, because I couldn't bear to look at the hurt and broken expression etched in his face.I ducked my head, ashamed that I didn't tell him earlier, and traced my fingers over our initials carved into the back of the boulder we sat on.

After a silent moment passed, I heard him speak.

"Where are you moving to? When are you going to leave?" He asked in a hoarse, vulnerable tone that made my heart ache with stabs to my heart of sadness.

"New California. I-I'm leaving tomorrow morning right before dawn." I replied quietly, my body controlled by horrible sniffles and seizures that never seemed to stop.

After what it seemed like forever, Adrien hugged me for the last time ever. I inhaled his comforting scent of cherries, lemons, and something masculine that always made me calm. I put my chin right on the crook of his neck, and he rested his chin on the top of my hazel hair. We stayed there for a while, until he suddenly pulled away from me.

I blinked, and he slowly reached to the pocket of his hoodie and pulled out a photo, 2 letters, and what seemed like two jewelry box.

"I-I uh, was waiting for you guys' 14 year birthdays to give this to you, b-but I-I, don't think I will be here for your birthday, so I-I wanted to give this to you and your brother. "

He opened one of the jewelry boxes, and used his long nimble fingers to pick up the bracelet. It was the most beautiful bracelet I have ever seen. It was a silver bracelet that had one aquamarine crystal at the front, and two smaller beautiful blue cat's eye stone on either side. Adrien slowly slipped it onto my right hand, his slender fingers slightly brushing my wrist that made me shiver in a good way. He also handed me a photo. When I looked at the photo, I was instantly hit with a large wave of emotions that threatened to spill out of my eyes. It was on our last birthday, when we invited Adrien every year to join us. I was hugging Adrien while Aris was messing with my hair.

Knowing that I most likely would never see him again, the tears pooled in my eyes.

Adrien then gave me the two letters, one labeled Aris and one labeled Aileen. He then gave me the other jewelry box.

"Don't open the letters until both of your birthdays, and please give the jewelry box to Aris." He looked at me sadly.

That's when the dam broke and all the tears started flowing. Adrien hugged me, and I buried my face into his shoulder while he rubbed the small of my back.

"Shhh.... Let it out... Let it out." Ian whispered softly into my ear.

"Adrien Grayer, I love you. " I whispered quietly, but loud enough for him to hear. I lifted my head up, and looked into his beautiful eyes, drinking in the sight of his soft waves of hair that curled in locks at the end of his ear, his sharp jawline, his straight and narrow nose, and the smatter of freckles across his scarlet cheeks, and his soft rosy lips.

"Aileen Rivers, I love you too." And then he kissed me.

I was suddenly exploding with wonderful sensations tingling all over my body, and he kissed me softly, tenderly, and I loved every second of it. It was as if my entire body was finally at rest, it felt like I was whole again. When we finally stopped, he was breathless, and I was panting.

"Ian, I want you to promise me, never to replace me, and never forget about me. I will miss you and Astrid. "

"Promise."

For the rest of the afternoon, we laid on the boulder, hugging each other like world was ending. Which, to me, felt like it.
