Eyes You Can't Trust

Hello! My name is Charlotte. I live in a small town in New Brunswick. The name of my town is Eel River Crossing. It's home to just over 1000 people. I have lived here my whole life with my mom, dad and our pink cockatoo named Cherry. In the summer when it's warm enough I get to let Cherry out for a fly around town. She loves to fly over the waters of our small town. In most places, I would not feel safe doing that but out here everyone knows my bird and where to bring her back if she ever got lost. One of the things that make this town great is how close people are. When someone moves it makes headlines. Well, it would if we had a local newspaper. As everyone knows everyone it's a peaceful town other than the occasional petty theft it's mostly crime free not that you could commit much crime here anyways it would be too easy to catch you, so our town has remained safe and sound. So yeah that's my life.

Last Sunday, an old lady named Samantha moved into the house next to us. She is our only neighbour. My parents welcomed her with open arms since she seemed like a sweet old lady who would bake cakes and offer us some. She would leave town a lot and every time she brought us something, usually sweets that we "had to try" according to her. Despite all this, she always scared me. Her eyes seemed empty and whenever she seemed happy her eyes would say otherwise. Her pet macaw seems to trust her blindly. Our walls are solid here so even if I tried I would never be able to hear her doing something evil. At this point, you probably think I'm being paranoid or something and I very well may be but trust me there's something wrong with her, just look at her eyes. Why can't anyone else see what I see!?

I have spoken to my best friend Chloe about this. She does agree that Samantha seems a little too perfect, as if she's trying to put up a fake persona. But my parents don't see it. I swear they're dumb as a sack of potatoes. On the bright side, Samatha managed to severely piss off my grandma so there's hope for my family's collective intelligence. In other news, Cherry got into a fight with her reflection and lost and has been whining for three days now. By whining I mean screaming at the top of her lungs every time she walks past that mirror, who needs sleep anyways. Today I got a job at the mall.Though it's minimum wage I still try my best. It's not bad really, my coworkers don't seem very talkative at all, that's ok I guess.

My silly cockatoo never forgave that innocent mirror. It had to be thrown out so we could all have a good night's sleep. On the bright side she's allowing cuddles again and not screaming profanities at random. Her English is getting better slowly, she's starting to make sense. Last night she told me " I'd like to do cookie. I try. I could try " while I had a cookie in my hand, I was so proud. The next morning she got into my room and demanded cuddles, it would have been cute if it wasn't two in the morning and if I didn't have work in the morning.

So I started my first week at my job at the post office in the mall. It went well actually until my neighbor decided to start coming in for an hour every day and talk about food. One day she came in on my birthday and brought me clothes. I have never told her my size or where I worked. On the bright side, my co-workers are nice and are helping me with understanding this complex job. Just this morning Samantha saw me typing at my computer and she told me I was too short then walked away. One hour later she came back with this weird green pad. Honestly it looked like a cooling pad but apparently, it wasn't. She insisted that I sit on it so I did. I got up an hour later to use the washroom and she saw that there was a hole in the weird pad (yes she stayed with me for an hour) so logically she took it away. When I came back she explained that it had to be returned and she had spent 100 dollars on it. Now I want a restraining order.

Cherry got into a fight with the neighbor's macaw. She lost. She's way smaller than the other bird. Samatha got mad. According to her, it's my fault that her bird got into my backyard and beat up my cockatoo. She yelled at me until my parents came back. This was unlike her. I never heard her yell at anyone. Well, this just means that I trust her a lot less than I did and I'm definitely right to never trust her.

My school laptop went missing. I always keep it in the drawer next to my bed so Cherry doesn't chew my keyboard but now it's gone. I looked everywhere and it was nowhere to be found. I saw it next door on the kitchen table. Why would a 70-year-old woman who needs help with google searches steal my laptop? Hers is so much more expensive! I showed it to my parents but they didn't call the police because she's "like family at this point." My father went over there and talked to her and got my laptop back so..... I don't know what to think all I know is I'm locking my door and I'm very uncomfortable. My father said that she accidentally took my laptop when she came over yesterday. Interesting since no one invited her. Best of all I get to see her at work yet again tomorrow.

Finally, Samantha got kicked out of the post office. There is a God out there. Now to get her kicked out of my life. For the first time since my town was founded, there was a murder. This is worrisome since the killer hasn't been found yet. I noticed that Sam seemed a little out of it the next day. I have a suspicion she did it. It might be extreme to accuse her of murder but if you could see the soulless empty look in her eyes you wouldn't question it a all. In other good news, Cherry is feeling better from the attack. She had two broken bones and was weakened from the macaw attack.

My neighbor got arrested. Not for murder but for trespassing and harassment .She actually did the tresspaing on the night of the murder so I do know that she didn't kill that man. Thankfully she's out of my life and I'll be in college in September so I'm safe and sound. And frankly, I don't think I'll ever want to open this book up and remember her creepy emotionless eyes.
