After losing her family to a terrible car wreck, A.J. struggles with the harsh reality that she has lost almost everything that was precious to her. The guilt that she was the cause of the accident, and the fact that she feels like she can no longer rely on anyone but herself, has taught her to be independent, quiet, and very reluctant to let anyone inside of her world. But after being shipped across the world to live in Australia with her Aunt and Uncle, she finds herself faced with the challenge of breaking down her walls to let in a boy she barely knows, but feels an instant attraction to.
Growing up in a single parent home, Ashton has never known what its like to have a stable family life. The weight of family responsibility, and fear of failure, has led him to put up an egotistical front that made people think he was self-reliant, strong, and highly resistive to letting himself become attached to anyone. But after meeting an intriguing new girl at school, he finds himself willing to sacrifice his cocky reputation in order to get to know her.
They come from two completely different worlds, but despite those differences they discover that they needed each other to rely on. He was outwardly confident, cocky, and wild. She appeared to be quiet, secluded, and shy. But they both wore these masks to hide who they truly were from the world.
