I should have kissed Sam, Hermione thought. I should have kissed her back because I know deep down I wanted to. But I guess I was a little too late.
Rose, who's a Slytherin, had already admitted her feelings towards Sam.
Hermione realized from her squeaky voice that she was the same girl she heard talking about Sam in the comfort room.
"Right, I know you all will be excited for today," Professor Slughorn announced, her smile beaming towards the students.
Sam and Hermione sat awkwardly still on their table. None of them uttered a single word, even just a single greeting when they arrived.
Professor Slughorn showed the class a gold looking cauldron containing reddish liquid. "This class is Amortentia. Now can anyone of you here tell me what Amortentia is and does?"
Hermione swallowed a lump in her throat. When she noticed no one was raising their hands to answer, Hermione hesitantly raised her own.
"It's a love potion, Professor.... It causes a powerful infatuation or obsession from the drinker.... It has a distinctive mother-of-pearl sheen, and steam rises from it in characteristic spirals... It has a different aroma for everyone who smells it, reminding each person of the things that they find most attractive... even if the person doesn't acknowledge or is unaware of their fondness for the object of their affection themselves... For me, I can smell fresh cut grass... new parchment... and lav...," Hermione decided to stop, fidgeting nervously on her seat.
"Right you are, Miss Granger. Ten points to Gryffindor."
As Professor Slughorn discussed how dangerous the potion was, Hermione couldn't help darting her eyes to steal glances at Sam beside her. Sam just stayed still and silent.
"Now, I have another one to show you," Professor Slughorn said as he walked around his table and picked up a small vial of molten gold liquid."
"This, class, is Felix Felicis-"
"Liquid luck," Hermione muttered.
"Right again, Miss Granger. And can you explain further what is it and its purpose?"
"Felix Felicis... is a magical potion that makes the drinker lucky for a period of time, during which everything they attempt will be successful. It is meant to be used sparingly, however, as it causes giddiness, recklessness, and dangerous overconfidence if taken in excess," Hermione answered, trying to maintain confidence.
"Twenty points to Gryffindor. You truly are the brightest witch of your age."
Hermione couldn't help but looked down in embarrassment.
"Now, class, what I want you to do today is to get yourselves a partner and make the perfect concoction of Draught of the Living Dead," Professor Slughorn continued.
The class stayed silent in front of him, not wanting to do as told or taking the time to do what was told.
Then Professor Slughorn added. "For those who can perfect the brew of said potion will win this vial of Felix Felicis."
As soon as he said that, the class suddenly stood on their feet, interested to win the prize.
Hermione glanced at Harry and Ron. Of course, they will be partners, Hermione thought. That would leave me and Sam.
Then Hermione turned to look at Sam.
"So... I guess we should get started," Hermione said.
Sam nodded and opened her mother's diary in front of her instead of her Potions book. Hermione should understand why Sam was acting this way. If Sam's not interested to win the liquid luck, she should be at least just interested to learn.
