Prologue

As a beam of light shot through the window, I opened my eyes. I was surrounded by the earthen walls of a small pit-house we lived in. The floor was made of solid ground covered in dry grass to create at least some protection against the freezing soil.
It was hard to believe anyone would call such a cold place home and yet it was.

Every day I would get up at sunrise, wake up the rest of the family to head straight to work.
It's not like I was a creature of habit, but the job had to be done as soon as possible in order to avoid winter starvation.

I nudged my brother's shoulder, interrupting his beauty sleep.

Ki was the only man in the family. Ever since mom and dad passed away, he had been taking this responsibility very seriously. Often times I had to force him to take a break for him not to overwork himself.

' Wake Aurey and Luna up. I'll go and prepare breakfast, ' I intoned. Ki obediently nodded and went to get the others up.

Living on a farm wasn't very rewarding. Sure, we had enough food to pull through the winter, but it wasn't the type of work that brought much of a revenue. Yet we were in need of money and this was the only way to earn it.

Once the harvest had been collected, we set off to the local market place. Our family came from a very poor background, so it could get challenging to catch a person's eye, since more wealthy merchants attracted more clients.

Our common buyers were mostly elderly people who wouldn't allow the opportunity of a bargain to slip. Ultimately, we were pressed to lower the prices radically so that we would gain at least some profit.

As some pennies were earned, I left Ki with the girls in charge of our market spot and went to see if I could buy some leather or crockery. Just as I was taking a glance at some goods for sale, somebody rammed into my shoulder. I turned to see a mysterious man shoving through the crowd. He didn't even take a moment to apologize for so discourteous a manner.

Don't get me wrong - I constantly encounter such rude people. Yet his appearance gave me the creeps, mostly due to his odd choice of clothing - all dark including a mask covering his face. Whatever he had in mind, I wished not to get involved and minded my own business.

Dinner passed in complete silence only disturbed by the sound of my youngest sister's sloppy eating. I took notice of Aurey hesitating to eat her soup.

I sighed ' Aurey, you do realise we're not in the position to be picky?'

'It's only getting worse,' she mumbled.' The harvest...It crops up less each year to follow. Not to mention that we've been getting less customers for the past year'.

'Look, I know it's been a bad year, but this shouldn't be getting you down. We'll manage somehow, you'll see,' I tried to cheer her up.

'If only mama and papa were here,' Luna sniffled.

An awkward silence hung over the room creating an uncomfortable atmosphere. It broke as I stammered 'Mom and dad aren't with us anymore'.

Everyone switched their expression to mournful one. Luna looked as if she was about to break down. Why did I say something so bitter in the first place?

That's when I blurted 'Still, if they were here, they would tell us to stay strong and keep fighting, even if the whole universe has turned against you. We have each other and that's what matters' I announced in an encouraging tone 'As long as we're together, nothing else matters'.

Luna's face brightened up. So did both Ki's and Aurey's. These kids deserved a better life and I would do anything for them to be happy.

What I didn't expect was how the next day my whole world would turn upside down.
