Caught in the Middle

The little girl tightened her grip on her mother’s hand as she was attacked by massive amounts of bodies, all rushing around her at once. She was overwhelmed from her 11 and a half hour flight from Mumbai with a stop in Singapore. The ever-growing herd of travellers at the airport just added to her exhaustion. There was only so much pushing a 5 year old with jet lag could do. Mixed scents from the people around her and the fast food outlets consumed the girl’s senses as her mother dragged her along the airport along with a trolley containing their luggage. Gradually the crowd thinned out and the girl finally had some space to move around without touching another’s body. She suddenly felt her mother’s breath on her neck as she said “ We’re nearly out honey. Keep an eye out for Daddy”. The girl nodded and true to her mother’s words, she could see natural light as she stepped out of the cool air of the airport into the arrivals section. The girl scanned the crowd and finally spotted her dad waving his hands around like a madman. The girl immediately pulled her hand out of her mother’s grip and ran towards her father’s open arms. She sighed a sigh of relief as her father engulfed her in a bear hug and kissed her forehead. “I missed you so much Daddy”, she said as she kissed his cheek. “I missed you too sweetie. I love you” her Dad replied. “I love you too Daddy”, the little girl said as she kissed her Dad’s cheek once again. By now her mother had reached them and greeted her husband with a tight hug and a kiss on the cheek. “ Welcome to Melbourne honey”, the girl’s father said to her mother as he led them to the car with their luggage.
