edo, the de facto capital of japan, and the seat of the tokugawa shogunate. one of the largest cities in the world, edo is home to a flourishing urban culture, centred around the the notion of a 'floating world', consisting largely of daimyo mansions surrounding edo castle.

government and administration
edo's municipal government is under the responsibility of the roujuu, the senior officials which oversee the entire bakufu – the government of the tokugawa shogunate. the machi-bugyou (city commissioners) are samurai officials in charge of protecting the citizens and merchants of edo, and kanjou-bugyou (finance commissioners) are responsible for the financial matters of the shogunate.

brief history
tokugawa ieyasu emerged as the paramount warlord of the sengoku period in japan following victory at the battle of sekigahara in october 1600. tokugawa formally founded the tokugawa shogunate in 1603 and established his headquarters at edo castle, which had been constructed by outa doukan in 1457 and the town of edo had developed as a joukamachi around it.
