I sat on the couch drinking hot chocolate while watching my two daughters unwrap their presents from under the Christmas tree, and smiling as they compare presents with each other. I look beside me where my eldest daughter, Shain, sat with her head in one of her hands and a frown on her face. i scoot over to her and wrapped my arm around her shoulder.

"Shain, honey, what's up with the long face? You should be up there unwrapping your presents. Not sitting around moping." I ask while propping my legs up on the leg rest.

"I dont know. It just doesnt feel right unwrapping presents and celebrating christmas without Mom being her." A tear slipped down her face as she watched her little sisters giggle and throw wrapping paper at each other and she continued. "She promised she'd be here with us on Christmas. Daddy, I miss her." I nodded my head and looked down at my lap. My wife is in the U.S. air force at the time. She hasn't been home for at least two and a half months now. But they were suppose to send her home for the holiday for a week. Even though im not sure if she can make it home on time for Christmas. But i'm not going to tell Shain that. I looked up at Shain and sqeezed her shoulder for comfort.

"Shain we all miss her too and want her home for Christmas, but you know that it's not her fault she's late, because it takes them from were they are at, to here like 7 hours sweetie. Now turn that frown upside down and open your presents. Thats what your Mom would want you to do instead of missing out on what Santa gave you." I winked at her and she smiled and got up from her spot and walked over to the Christmas tree and grabbed her gift and started to unwrap it.
Once she saw what was wrapped up, her face brightened and her smile grew wide.

"OHMYGOSH!!! THANK YOU DADDY!! THANK YOU!!" She screamed while she ran over to me and jumped in my arms and gave me a big hug. About three seconds later, she let go and started jumping up and down with her new phone in her hand.

I laughed and took a quick picture of her and another picture of my other daughters. "Dont thank me, thank Santa, he knew thats what you wanted for Christmas." She giggled and nodded her head. Shain went back over to the couch and started going through her phone.

I walk over to my other daughters. "How"d you like your new toys?" I asked them and they stopped throwing wrapping paper at each other and stood up and gave me a hug.

"I really like my dolls and my new dollhouse." My six year old daughter, Jessie, said while letting go of me.

"I like my toys too Daddy, tell Santa thanks." My other eight year old daughter, Sofia, said while letting go of me also and they both went over to Shain and showed her their toys. I let them play with their toys for alittle bit until it turned seven thirty. Thats when I finally spoken again.

"Alright girls, stand infront of the Christmas tree so i can take a picture of all of you." They all agreed and stood infront of the Christmas tree with huge smiles that can light up any room that they are in and posed for the picture. I snapped a picture and set down my camera.

"Who's ready to lay down on the couch and watch Frosty the Snowman?" I ask while laying myself on the couch. All three of them said "Me" and came over to the couch and layed down. Jessie layed in my lap and the other two girls layed beside each other at the other end of the couch, all snuggled in a blanket. We layed on the couch for a couple hours. Letting the heat from the fireplace warm our bodies while we watch Christmas episodes until everybody felt tired. Jessie already fell asleep on my lap and Shain and Sofia was at the other end with droopy eyes. I stood up and picked Jessies sleeping body up in my arms.

"Lets go upstairs and go to sleep, okay girls?" I say while waiting for them to get up. They nodded their heads and stood up and we started walking up the stairs and into the girls bedroom. I set Jessie in her bed and tucked her in and gave her a kiss on the forhead and walked over to Sofia and did the same. Lastly, I walked over to Shain and kissed her forhead.

"Goodnight Shain, I know your Mom didnt make it on time for Christmas, but I know she didnt mean too, something must've came up, im sorry." I whispered as i tucked her in. She nodded

"I know Dad, it's okay. We'll see her another day." She smiled and rolled over onto her side.

I know that she wasnt okay, but i'll just let that go. "Thats my girl, love you sweetheart." I walked toward the door and turned around to get one last look at my girls.

"Love you too Daddy." She whispered and I smiled and walked out the door and into my room where I layed down on my bed. I set my alarm for eight forty so I can get up and wake the girls up too.

Everything was quiet that night, other than the ticking of my clock and the wind against my icy window. I dozed off to sleep with the thought of the day and my wife and children in my head.
