Chapter 1: Couldn't Earth just explode instead?
I was asleep under a desk in an abandoned building until I was awoken by the cold wind that flew in. My eyes snapped open and I quickly snapped my head up, looking around. I sighed feeling relieved nothing strange was around me. I was about to crawl out from under the desk until I heard some noises, making me freeze. My eyes widened when I heard a low groan and a dragging sound. Something is coming my way, I just hope it's not what I think it is.
The cold breeze hit me again making me shiver and get goose bumps. I shuddered but immediately sent my hand to my mouth, covering it, to stop my teeth from making any sounds, and closing my eyes shut tightly. I heard the noises again and started to freak out. It suddenly became hard to breathe. I felt the speed of my heartbeat start getting faster as my palms started getting sweaty.
Alright Sky... This is your time. Just jump out and kill that thing. I nodded to myself, determined, and took a good grip on my gun. In a matter of seconds I stepped out of my hiding place in position, pulled the hammer back(what prepares the gun to fire) and right when I was about to pull the trigger, I stopped. My gun was pointing right at my best friend's head.
I let of a sigh of relief dropping my arms to my sides, feeling the tension leave my body. I felt numb. I tilted my head back, relaxing my mind. Everything was silent for a moment. I looked straight at Ryder's eyes.
"You're an ass." That was the first thing that left my mouth making Ryder bursr out into laughter.
"You should've-ahaha..-seen your...-your face!" He said between laughs, holding on to his stomach. I rolled my eyes and walked past him.
"Be careful Ry, I could've killed you right there!" I turned to look at him with a concerned look.
"Oh, chill out Skylar. I was just having some fun. No need to get all cranky at me. Can't you take a joke?" He didn't hold a smirk back as he leaned against the desk I was hiding behind minutes ago. Crossing his arms over his chest, making his shoulders look broad.
"I thought it was one of those infected peopl-"
"Zombies." Ryder interrupted my sentence, correcting me.
"They're not Zombies..." I rolled my eyes once again.
"Yes they are, Sky. What do you call people that walk around limping, that they're brains don't work, they look all bloody, they're pale, and their breath stinks worse than a llamas?" He stared at me for a few seconds. "That's right: Zombies." He answered his own question, feeling satisfied with his explanation.
Well, I think it's something beyond that. I thought to myself. This fight between us is pointless but I always defend my opinion. I sighed, turning to look at the floor.
Ryder, or Ry, is my best friend since like forever. Our mom's were best friends so I think that pretty much explains it all. He's been the wind beneath my wings these past 7 months. Ever since the Apocalypse, we've had to learn how to defend ourselves, use weapons, learn how to live on our own pretty much as a hobo, and just learn how to survive. Nobody said it would be easy...it hasn't. But we've supported each other every step of the way. Couldn't Earth just explode insteas? That way humanity would be done and that's it! Really. It didn't have to be this complicated.
"Sky?" I heard Ryder say, making me snap out of my thoughts.
"Huh?"
"I said... We should stay the night here. We clearly need some rest." Ryder pulled my hand, taking me outside the abandoned building so we could look for things we could make a fire with.
After collecting a couple of wooden sticks and pieces of carton, we started making a fire. We put everything in place and Ryder made a small hole in the wood so he could make a fire using a branch and placing it in the hole. You know, like those survival movies and shit.. The difference is that this is real. In a few minutes Ryder was done and we had a fire. What can I say? He's a pro. We finally sat down next to each other enjoying the heat that the fire was giving off.
"We have to leave early in the morning. If not, the Zombies might track us down." Ryder said and I nodded, agreeing. "You okay?" He looked at me with concern.
"Yeah..." I sighed. "I guess I just miss people." I shrugged not giving much details of what was going on in my head. I looked down at my dirty hands, drying to dust the dirt off, like they would actually get cleaned like that..
