It took a moment for someone to come to the door but after a moment, I heard it open and then I heard my mom scream. I felt her grab my shoulder and then pull me into her arms.
"What happened to you, Max?!" she practically screamed in my ear.
"I fell for a trick... Mom... Kasai... He's coming..."
"What do you mean? Kasai isn't due for-"
"Dawaen beat me up and punched me in the stomach. I tried to protect him, Mom!" I started crying, making it harder to breathe than it already was. "I couldn't protect my baby!"
"Oh my god... Brunswick! Brunswick, I need you!" she screamed.
I felt a feeling within me and I winced, although I didn't exactly feel pain. I don't know why I'm numb to the pain at the moment but I could still feel the pressure of labor by my body was trying to incur. I few minutes later, I felt someone pull me up and a strong arm came around my torso to help me walk better.
"I got ya, Maxxy. Just least on me and we'll get you to Dr. Bluewater."
"I'm a failure, Papa!" I wailed, burying my face into his shoulder.
I felt his arm tighten around me. "You're not a failure, Max. You never asked for any of this. We'll get you to Dr. Bluewater and he can help us, okay? You just need to keep the contractions at bay. I know that's asking a lot because they make you want to push, but without an exit..."
I nodded, understanding the importance as I felt something run past us. The car made the noise for it being unlocked and the car door opened. The car turned on and Dad maneuvered me into the backseat and slipped in behind me. I leaned on him and grabbed hold of his shirt as the roll of contractions pushed against me, trying to make me push. I shuddered in pain as I went against my body and I felt Dad pull me closer to him.
"You're alright, Maxxy. I've got ya."
*******************************************
We arrived at the storage building and Dr. Bluewater and Dr. Market met us outside. Whatever had kept the pain away had lost its potency and now I was in the most excruciating pain of my life. Dad just picked me up and carried me into the storage building. I could tell he was struggling with the weight (since Kasai had grown and all) and I'm sure I didn't help when I tensed up and clamped onto Dad's shirt as I tried to avoid a contraction. It was harder to keep from pushing than I thought it was. It reminded me of when you have sudden diarrhea really bad but you're about ten minutes from home in the car and you have to clamp your butt cheeks together to keep from shitting all over yourself. Obviously, this was on a different level, but the struggle was real.
I felt Dad sit me on a table and Dr. Bluewater began to wash his hands as Dr. Market started pulling out instruments and machinery.
"How far along are the contractions?" Dr. Bluewater asked.
"Max?" Dad asked.
"I don't know! I can't... I can't think to count..."
"He's going into labor because someone beat him up; can we focus on that, please?" I heard Mom say a little harsher than usual.
"No offense, Geneva, but due to the nature of the situation, Kasai comes first. As you said, he's going into labor because of the assault and that means that Kasai is trying to exit a place that has no exit. You and Brunswick need to leave."
"What?" Dad said.
"We have to operate immediately." Dr. Market said.
"Here?!" Dad screamed.
