A student from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School recently showcased an art piece at an art exhibition that contained a heart with splatters, saying "Love is a Mess." This art piece conveys her grief during her experience in the mass shooting.
Art Therapy helps kids build the courage to share their personal struggles. I understand the value of art because it helps counteract any negative thoughts that are triggered by my episodes with Bipolar Disorder. Students who partake in Art Therapy programs show a 3.6 % decrease in disciplinary infractions, a 13% increase in academic improvement, and an 8% increase in emotional growth.
This is why implementing Art Therapy in schools would be efficient for students who feel like they don't have a voice. Eve Samples from the Treasure Coast Newspapers states that Florida's arts funding went down 93% in the last five years, ranking the state 48 out of 50. It's time for these cuts to correct the wrongs if they want the state's children to grow happy and healthy.
Art Therapy goes a long way and makes a difference in the mind of a student. Every student deserves to know that there is still hope.
