The Job

I walked out of Starbucks like I do every day of the week. The scent of caramel and coffee filled my nose. I breathed it in and looked at my surroundings. It was cooler today and I was wrapped in a cute green peacoat. My long honey colored hair flew around in the chilling air.

When I walked into work, Lacey greeted me with a warm smile. I smiled back and asked her,"Anything new?"

"We got a call for a wedding this weekend."

"Where?"

"Up state. About two hours."

"Anyone on the job yet?"

"Nope. We're gonna have a meeting!"

I laughed,"Okay."

I walked around the corner into my cute little office. The walls were a rich orange, one of my favorite colors. It had mismatched accessories of red and green. It was so cozy. I worked at a photography studio in NYC. In my office I edited my photos(or someone else's). We would each take turns doing jobs and editing. It was pretty laid back.

In high school we were all interested in photography so we formed a little business. It was going quite well and we were fairly well known. We would do weddings, birthday parties, bat mitzvahs, anything. Then we would edit the photos the way people wanted. It was a nice little cycle.

I finished getting settled and walked down the hall to the "break room". It was more like a kitchen with a TV. We all make breakfast there in the morning if we're running late or just forget.

I rounded the corner and stopped dead in my tracks. He was back. The guy I had been in love with for God knows how long was back. And he wasn't supposed to be. His golden brown hair was shorter than I remember. But his big brown eyes were the same as ever.

"You're back," I stated casually.

"Yep. Didn't take as long as thought it would. Ended kind of abruptly," he scratched the back of his neck, eyes darkening a bit. Now, I'm not a male expert, but something was definitely up. He was supposed to be going on a "vacation" with his girlfriend for the whole week. It was Tuesday.

"What..... happened?" I asked hesitantly.

"Nothing really..."

"Do you want to talk about it?"

I know guys don't like talking about their "feelings" but I needed to ask.

He shrugged. In Jas talk, that was a yes. I sat down at the small table silently telling him to join me. He sat opposite of me and looked down at his hands.

"We broke up."

Despite his words, I was happy. I had liked Jas since high school. Middle school, actually. All this time I had been waiting, wishing, and hoping he would make a move. Maybe this was it! I shouldn't get my hopes up though. It hasn't happened yet, why now? Uhg.

"I'm sorry," I said.

"No it's fine. I was kind of expecting it. We were having problems anyway."

That was news to me. Whenever Rena came to the work place, they were glued to the hip. Happily in love. I guess I was wrong.

"Was it... are you... did she..?" I sputtered, trying to get the word out. If this was my only shot, I had to make sure he was over her.

"Uh... I broke up with her."

Okay keep your calm. This doesn't mean anything. But this has to be it! This is my chance!

"So are-" I was cut off by Lacey calling for the meeting. Damn it!
