I hung up the phone, grabbed my keys and rushed for the door. So many thoughts were running through my head making up scenarios that just didn't make sense, but none of that mattered. The only thing that mattered was that my bestfriend was in trouble and he needed me and I was coming. I could hear my mom shuffling behind me calling out my name but I ignored her instead shuffling my keys for the right one to open my 2017 convertible.
"Where are you going? What's wrong?"
"Nothing mom!" Is all I said before the key I was jamming into the lock clicked rising the drivers side doors. I hopped in and without closing the doors shoved the key into the ignition. It sputtered as of to tell me I shouldn't be going out at this time of night but nothing was holding me back from my bestfriend. I twisted again but nothing.
"Dammit car, dont start your shit" I spat under my breath before twisting the key one last time. The engine coughed but it was running. I pulled the door shut and sped off down Elmira St toward BD where he said to meet him. It was so dark when I rolled into the park and I cruised around until I saw the bench next to the swingset and a pacing figure where he said he'd be. He didn't we even realised I'd ridden up beside him because he was too busy spitting things to himself and pacing back and forth. I lowered my window and whispered into the darkness.
"Jamal, what's wrong? What happened?"
Still he said nothing and continued in his current state.
"Jamal!" I said a bit louder this time. He froze as if I had hit the pause button on the VCR, his head locked on the ground beneath his feet. I spoke again
"What happe--"
"I FUCKED UP LANEY!" He yelled rising his head to face me.
His eyes ready sorrow, regret and fear. What the hell happened is the only question on my mind. I'd never seen him like this and it was starting to scare me.
"What do you mean you fucked up Jamal?"
He said nothing but instead shifted his eyes and fixed them a few feet ahead of him. I got out of the car for a better view and followed his eyes to the oak tree we used to play at as kids. I traced my eyes down to the foot of the tree then I saw it. I looked back at Jamal in horror at the scene.
"Is that a dead body Jamal?! Did you murder someone out here?!" I couldn't believe the words that just came out of my lips.
"Shut the hell up Laney! I told you I fucked up..."
I couldn't believe his words. Jamal Steven's, the teachers pet, biggest sweetheart in school, a gentlemen beyond words and my very best friend...has committed this crime there is no way.
He quickly pounced closer to me and laid his hands on my shoulders. His eyes were staring deeply into mine, his eyebrows arched in a sorrowful mountain. He continued...
" And you're gonna help me take care of this right?"
