Steven tried to decide whether to answer or not. He was still uncomfortable with talking to her after what had happened. He was thinking rejecting the call, but he did not want Connie to worry about him, so he pressed except.
"Steven!" Connie exclaimed. "HEEYY CONNNIEE whats up??" Steven laughed nervously. "I'm doin' alright, but iv'e been kinda worried about you." Crap, Steven thought. This was embarrassing. He did not want Connie to know he was still upset about the proposal. "Why? Everything is just great!" Steven lied. "Well, when I saw how you reacted at the hospital, I just wanted to make sure you were OK." Connie responded with a tinge of concern in her voice. "N-No! E-Everything is fine!" Steven insisted. "Well, if your really sure..." Connie said. "Anyways.. another reason I called is I was just wondering if you wanted to hang out today. I think I just need a break from my studies and I--" Steven flinched at these words. "NO!!" Steven cried, throwing his phone at his pillow. He put his back up against the the wall, covering his ears. "Steven?! Are you still there??" Connie yelled, yet Steven did not answer. "Wait.. Steven.. you don't think..." Steven could not hear anymore. Just the thought of even talking to Connie was too much for him to bear. Breathing heavily, his skin glowing pink, Steven started to run to his phone to hang up. Before he could make it, Steven fell onto his bed, writhing in pain, with his gem glowing once again. He tried to reach for his phone, but could not move. It was that reaction that had happened earlier. "STEVEN!! WHATS HAPPENING TO YOU!?" Connie cried, hearing Steven's painful screams through the phone. "I-I-It's nothing.. I swear!" Steven strained, struggling to form words. All of a sudden, Steven began to hallucinate, seeing butterflies all around him. He stretched his arm out and got a grasp of the phone. As soon as he got in in his hand, he immediately hung up, sending waves of relief throughout his body. His gem faded out and his glow dissipated. Steven panted as he sat up. He now knew that this gem issue was clearly something to see the Diamonds about. Just then, Garnet came up the stairs. "Steven, I heard screaming! Is everything alright?" Garnet asked. "Yeah, I'm alright!" Steven replied. As Garnet walked back downstairs, Steven stood up and walked out onto his balcony, making his way up to his diamond base.
Steven paused as he started to rethink his decision. Wouldn't visiting the Diamonds just cause him more stress? Steven shook off this troubling thought and called the Diamonds. Before he knew it, White Diamond was on the screen. "Oh, Steven!! What a wonderful surprise!" White exclaimed joyfully. "Hey White." Steven nervously smiled. White called out for Yellow and Blue, bringing them into view. "Steven!" they both excitedly said. "Have you finally decided to live with us here on Homeworld?" Steven sighed. "No, but I do feel like you deserve a visit." He suggested. "OH THAT'S GREAT NEWS!" Blue cried, clapping her hands together. "Oh, that reminds me Steven," she continued. "there's also another gem who wishes to see you." Blue lifted he hand into view. "Hiya Steven!" said the gem. Steven smiled weakly.
It was Spinel.
