If you had told Fiona Ainsley that morning that in the next 24 hours her whole world would change she probably would have scoffed in your face and accused you of being a freak. Today was the day of the year 10 science excursion and no fortune telling nonsense would  would get in the way of the one day Fiona got to spend away from her step-siblings.

Fiona was an only child until her mother decided to remarry, and as much as she loved her mother, she really did, her remarriage wasn’t something Fiona took as a joyful celebration. Her stepfather, Vernon, was an alright guy, he at least made an effort to be nice to Fiona, but it was his children that really sent her over the edge. Nelson and Selena. Nelson was a two years younger than Fiona and was bearable on a good day but Selena, who was a current year 12, went out of her way to make Fiona’s life hell. Fiona isn’t one to be bullied, rather she’s friends enough with everyone in her year to ensure that, but as soon as Selena and her year 12 friends came within 10 feet of Fiona she was ridiculed to no end.

That’s why Fiona stays with her father as much as she possibly could. Not because she didn’t love her mother, she just enjoyed being with her father a lot more. Fiona’s dad was head coach at the Bremin Bandicoots Football Club. That’s probably where her love of sport came from. Fiona and her father would bond over football matches, whether it was watching AFL on the television or supporting the club and scouting players together, she was practically an honorary member of the team with the amount of time she spent at the club. James Ainsley wanted the best for his precious girl but being a football coach didn’t bring a big enough income for him to do that. Today however was not only Fiona’s year 10 excursion but the Bandicoots semi final, if they won this they would move to the preliminary final and it was ultra important for Fiona to be sitting in the coaches box with her dad for moral support, she was, according to her father anyway, the Bandicoots’ good luck charm.

“I’ll be at here at 4:30 to pick you up alright?” said Fiona’s father as he pulled into a parking bay at Bremin High, “have you got everything? We’ll be heading straight to the club, do you have got a change of clothes? A jumper?” Fiona couldn’t help herself as she laughed softly at her dads antics.
“Yes dad,” She told him with a small smile, “I’ve got everything.” She gave her dad a kiss on the cheek and a small hug before opening the passenger door. “I’ll be back before you know it Dad. Bremin would be lost without their star player.” Fiona joked as she exited the car. She shut the door lightly and her father wound the window down.
“Just stay safe Kiddo, don’t get lost and have some fun.” He added through the window, Fiona’s dad always tried to stay out of her ex-wife’s life but he knew, as much as Fiona tried to hide it, that Veronica’s step-children gave Fiona a hard time. He was just grateful that Fiona was able to spend some time away from them.
“Get lost?” She scoffed, “Never.” And with that she waved goodbye to her father as he pulled out of the parking lot.

Fiona let out a small sigh as she turned away from the absent bay and saw the school bus parked near the entrance of the school. She quickly pulled her permission slip out of the back pocket of her jeans and double checked that it was signed by her dad before shoving it back in her pocket and walking across the car park and onto the footpath. Fiona could hear Mr Bates, her science teacher, before she could see him.
“Good morning bush walkers.” She heard him call, “Ready to leave your comfort zones?”

As Fiona walked towards Mr Bates to hand in her permission slip she saw a number of her class mates loitering around till they had to board the bus. She quickly scanned the front of the school and car lot for her best friend Alexis when a red football suddenly flew towards her face seemingly out of nowhere.
“Ainsley!” A voice called out to her as she caught the ball swiftly. Fiona swivelled around and saw Jake Riles holding his hand in the air signalling that he wanted the ball back. “It was Trent.” He added as it was any consolation for almost being hit in the face.
“Better have been Riles,” she yelled kicking the ball back to him and crossing the road to where he stood, “otherwise it would have been more than a ball hitting you in the face.”
Jake laughed as if being hit by girl was the funniest thing on the planet. He really was an arrogant jerk, Fiona thought to herself, being captain of the football team didn’t mean you had to be so pompous. And that was putting it lightly. Before either of them had a chance to throw an insult at one another Mr Bates had called the year 10s to get on the bus.

Fiona practically ran to Mr Bates pleased that she had an excuse to leave Jake alone and handed him her signed permission form.
“Thank you Fiona.” He said putting her form in his folder with the rest. He motioned to her that she could get on the bus but before she did Fiona remembered that she hadn’t seen Alexis at all.
“Hey sir?” She asked and Mr Bates looked at her, “you haven’t seen Alexis have you?”
“Already on the bus Fiona.” He gave her a short smile and Fiona said a quick ‘thank you’ in return before pulling herself onto the bus.

As she walked down the aisle she saw her best friend Alexis sitting towards the back of the bus. As soon as they made eye contact both girls grinned at each other and Fiona raced to sit beside her.
“I didn’t see you outside!” Fiona exclaimed as she pulled her bag off her back and put it at her feet as she sat down.
“I saw Trent almost hit you in the face with the footie and decided it was best to leave you alone.” Alexis laughed. Fiona and Trent did not get along one bit, he was a crude bully and Fiona was often left appalled by the way he treated others. Alexis tried her best to not stand in between Fiona and Trent but she often had to pull her back when she was on the verge of a fight.
“Bates saved the day.” Fiona joked and the girls continued to chatter away ignoring those around them until Mr Bates stood at the front of the bus and addressed his class.
“Okay listen up!” He started silencing the bus, “Welcome to the year 10 science excursion, which is quite literally a walk in the park, the Bremin Ranges Nation Park.” Fiona groaned loudly at Mr Bates bad pun and he threw her a pointed look. “In groups of four you will orienteer a seven kilometre walk to a pick up point marked on your map. You are expected to identify flora, and with any luck, fauna.” Bates paused for a second and a small grin crept onto his face, “Now, in the interest of breaking down social barriers, and as a little treat for me, I have pre-selected the groups. So don’t expected to be with any of your friends.” He finished and the students on the bus let out a loud collective groan. Fiona hung her head as Alexis grunted something about it ‘not being fair’. With a last minute head count and silent role check, Mr Bates sat down at the front of the bus and away they went. To experience nature.
