Chapter Forty-Eight

Every minute it hurt Kai, it felt like torture, it felt like every second and every minute someone stuck a knife in his chest and kept pushing it deeper and deeper. He still felt guilty for letting it happen, he felt that it would have been avoided if he had picked her up from his office. How could he have left her alone? What would he do if something happened to her or the baby she was carrying?

Having that child was not in the couple's plans, at least not so soon, but in such a short time their reality changed and they learned to love him/her even though it was still just cells. Losing a child hurts, but the possibility of losing it like that hurt even more. 

Kai shook his nervous leg while he was sitting there, from time to time he would get up and take a walk down the hall to stretch his legs, while his fingers would run through his hair and he would sigh deeply because of the anxiety that the whole situation was giving him. Whenever a nurse came out of the door where Kai was completely barred from entering and went after Anneliese, the young man would get up and ask for news or how long it would take before they told him something, but nothing. He would sit back in the chair completely defeated and frustrated.

Suho was talking to him about random things in an attempt to calm him down and distract him. For good minutes they had already talked about their jobs and how everything was going, how it was going with Anneliese – now alone – after Suho had left the house or how it was going with Emma, even though Suho had already lived with Emma for a month in Koh Samui. The two of them kept their voices down so as not to wake up Emma who had fallen asleep. She was sitting on Suho's leg, had her arm over her boyfriend's shoulders and her head on the curve of her neck when she fell asleep. 

The girl had woken up early to go to work and it had been a long day, and although she woke up once in a while and Kai insisted that they go home that it would be all right by himself both Suho and Emma refused to go. The girl made an effort to stay awake, but eventually surrendered to sleep. 

Waking up again, Emma quickly got up from Suho's lap and went to the machine to get a coffee, the girl came back and sat down next to Suho, he passed his hand on Emma's cheek, caressing her. 

"I can't stand waiting anymore." Kai says, for the millionth time, sighing deep. Suho averts his gaze from Emma and looks at Kai.

"I know it's hard but sooner or later they'll come out with news." Suho says it in a calm tone. Emma sighs by putting the disposable cup of her coffee on her chair arm and looks at the floor.

"I've heard it a thousand times, I will die in this chair of anxiety." Kai rolls his eyes, leaning back. 

"You need to give them time." Emma says, making Kai and Suho look at her. "On top of everything that happened she's also... pregnant. They're probably doing some exams." She looks at Kai who shakes his head. He knew that.

"That's what's worrying me the most." Kai confesses. 

"The baby?" Emma asks, Kai nods and she relaxes her shoulders."I think losing him would crush her from inside out. Not just her, but you too."

"You have no idea."

Emma had her legs bent over her chair while her head rested on Suho's shoulder. Suho was leaning against the back of his chair, arms crossed because he had given his shirt to Emma and it was a way to keep warm. Kai was quiet, his head resting on his hand as he looked at his watch. All three were silent when a nurse approached them. 

"Good night, I'm the nurse that took doctor Anneliese inside, are you related to her?" The woman briefly introduced herself, Kai quickly got up from his chair, just as Emma and Suho quickly straightened in theirs.

"I'm her boyfriend. Does it count?" Kai asks, the lady nods her head. 

"It does, yes." She answers, looking away at some papers in her hand.

"How is she? Is she okay? And the baby?" Kai asked a bunch of questions at the nurse.

"She has been cleaned up and we administered some painkillers." The nurse start by saying. "Since she was pregnant she had to be seen by an obstetrician and do an ultrasound."

"But are they okay? And when can I see her?"

"They are okay." She replies. "You may see her now."

Emma and Suho wanted to see Anneliese, but they thought it would be better if Kai had his moment with her alone, after spending hours in agony waiting for news. Kai hugged Emma and Suho as a form of thanks for being with him all that time. After that, Kai followed the nurse to the room where Anneliese was. The nurse knocked and opened the door, she looked at Anneliese and warned that she had someone to see her. Kai came in and quickly knelt down by the blonde's bed. He ran his hand through the blonde's hair and sighed.

"I'm so sorry, Liz."

"Please, don't." Anneliese sighs as she looks at him. "You have nothing to apologize for."

"I do." Kai shakes his head, holding her hand. "I promised I wouldn't let him touch you and hurt you, and I failed." 

"You couldn't have guessed it. Don't beat yourself, I'm okay."

"God, I was so scared." Kai comments by getting up and sitting on the couch next to Anneliese's bed. He rubs his face.

"I'm sorry, you shouldn't have to go through this." The blonde says look at the ceiling. "I guess, I signed my fate when I started dating him..." She shrugs.

"No, no. He won't get away this time, Liz." He shakes his head refusing to accept. Kai was determined to do what he could to get Oliver to finally get what he deserved, but Anneliese can't believe it.

"He always did, he'll always find me and make my life a living hell."

"I don't want to promise you, because clearly I can't keep it." Kai starts, In one move he sits on the edge of Anneliese's bed putting his arms beside the blonde's head, she stands in the middle and Kai leans forward. "But I'm gonna do everything I can to make sure this never happens again." Anneliese nods. 

"I know you will and I can't thank you enough for it." She replies. "I guess today I wasn't scared for me when I saw him. I was scared that I was going to lose him, Kai. I was so scared." 

Kai noticed how restless Anneliese was at the end of that sentence, as if she was having flashbacks of that moment in her head. Kai shook his head and pressed his lips against hers.

"You're safe now." He whispers.

Kai stayed with Anneliese for a long time until he left the room to go to Suho and Emma to tell them how the blonde was and thank them before sending the tired couple home. As soon as Kai approached them, Emma got up from the couch and then Suho, the three of them talked until the couple decided to leave and that the next morning they would pass by to see her. Kai nodded as he saw them leaving.
