Heather was sleepy today. When she wasn't working she'd be dozing off and Ada would have to shake her shoulder and get her to wake up. It started to become a cycle.
"Heather. HEATHER" Ada whisper shouted.
She blinked a few times before waking up again. "What? What is it?"
"Look who's here." She said gesturing to the door.
Emmett stood at the front door shaking his raincoat dry. Heather was suddenly wide awake.
"Oh my God what do I do?" she whisper shouted back to Ada.
Ada was smiling really big, "Oh I don't know GO WAIT HIS TABLE BEFORE SOMEONE ELSE DOES!" the whisper shouting didn't seem to be stopping.
"But what if I embarrass myself? Or what if he doesn't want me to serve him? What if he requests for someone else to serve him instead?" She ran her fingers through her hair in panic.
Ada put her hand on her shoulder. "Stop thinking so much. Just go. BEFORE SAXON GET'S TO HIM FIRST!" She whisper shouted yet again.
Heather whipped her head in his direction. She nearly sprinted out of the back room door and ran until she could reach Saxon. She grabbed his wrist and he stopped and turned around.
"Hey, Saxon." she stopped to take a few breaths. "D'ya need a break? I can take this one for you."
He laughed. "I don't know. You seem like you're the one who needs a break."
She was still panting. She rolled her eye's. "Just...take a break." she let go of his wrist.
He lifted his arms in the air as a surrender and laughed again. "He's all yours!" He walked off shaking his head.
Heather took a moment to catch her breath. Emmett didn't see any of that. Thank God. He was too busy playing with the things on the table.
Finally she walked to his table. "Hi. I'm Heather I'll be serving you today." she said.
He looked up and smiled. That damn smile of his. "Hey."
He recognized her. That was relieving.
"Hey. What can I get you?"
He was still smiling. He seemed to smile a lot. Which meant Heather's legs would give out any minute.
"I'll take a coffee."
"Is that all?"
"Yeah."
"Well don't you need a certain kind?"
"Just a regular coffee."
He went back to playing with the things on the table and Heather stood there. Just a coffee. That was it.
"I'm gonna need a little more. We have a ton of different kinds of coffee."
He shrugged. "Just one with cream and sugar. A regular coffee."
"Well you could've said that before..." she muttered, annoyed.
She wanted to slap herself. Did she just say that? Ugh. She just kept losing her chance of him possibly taking an interest in her. He definitely wouldn't now.
He only shrugged. "Sorry 'bout that. I guess I could've."
Damn, this guy. He seemed too nice. Or maybe Heather was only used to the other rude people she'd encountered in the diner.
"Okay. Well I'll be back with your coffee in a second."
"Thanks."
She walked off. God that was a rough start. But nothing so far had seemed to phase this guy. She could say anything and he'd just say something as simple as "S'okay." Maybe Ada was right. Maybe she was overthinking. It'd been a while since she'd gotten to actually communicate with a guy she had an interest in. Now that she actually was making the smallest bit of contact with someone she didn't want to mess anything up. Any little thing could make her lose her chance with the guy. That's what she thought at least.
