Sirius Black would do anything for his little brother.
When they were kids, he would take all the hits from their mother when she'd had a wine glass too many. When they were teens, he turned his back on his 'way out' to stay by his brother's side when he needed him most. When they were deatheaters, he used the Unforgivable Curses so Regulus wouldn't have to. He killed and tortured and suffered in the name of protecting his younger sibling as older brothers should.
So it would come to everyone's surprise when Sirius Black, the lion with a snake-tail, betrayed the Dark Lord and risked Regulus' life, his own and his wife's in an attempt to right the wrongs he'd made in his youth.

this is also an au where sirius never moves out to live with james and go on to join the order and be framed and all the rest. instead sirius stayed and promised to protect reggie as best he could; i.e. joining the deatheaters to get some authority and power to use to protect him. the rest of the altered events will be listed throughout the story so that's all you need to know for now.
