Lunch was awkward to say the least. If it wasn't for Ara's incessant chatter regarding her plans for Valentine's Day, lunch would have been painfully silent.
"Ara, you realize Valentine's Day is like a month away, right?" Mira interrupted her sister, mid-speeech.
Ara nodded excitedly and said, "Yes, but I have lots of cards to make, Mira! There's one for you, for Marv, for Daddy, for Mommy, for Lexi, for my teacher, Gary, Hailey, Isaac, Jay -"
"Karlos," Mira sing-songed with a smirk on her face.
Ara's cheeks turned a rosy red at the mention of 9 year old Karlos Greene.
"Mira," Delphina said, hiding her smile. "Be nice to your little sister."
Mira shrugged playfully and took a sip of her juice. "What? Everyone knows Ara's been in love with Karl since forever."
"I'm not! I'm not in love with Karl! Daddy, make her stop!" Ara cried out indignantly.
Mike simply rolled his eyes and said, "Mira, stop teasing your sister."
Satisfied with her father's response, Ara continued her speech. "I also need to make cards for Grandma and Grandpa and Grandfather," she said referring to Delphina's parents and Mike's father.
Snorting, Mira said, "Don't waste your time, princess. They'll just toss them in the trash."
Ara's ice blue eyes started to water and Mira found herself receiving unimpressed looks from all three adults in the room.
"It's what they did to mine. Right in front of my eyes actually. I'm just saving my sister from all that trouble. You know Marvin is going to be the only one either of them would ever get excited about, him being the 'heir' and all," the teenager defended herself.
Seeing that the adults weren't still very pleased at her, Mira added, "Ara, you can make valentines for William and Faith. You know they love it whenever we give them anything."
At the mention of Alexis's parents, who were like grandparents to the kids, Ara smiled brightly. "Of course, I'd make some for them Mira! You didn't have to tell me that."
After lunch was over, Mike took away Marvin for his afternoon nap while Delphina asked Mira to take Ara upstairs and entertain her younger sister for a while, much to her eldest's chagrin.
It was time for Delphina to make her request, her last plea.
