Usagi nineteen

>>>>CHAPTER 19<<<<

>>>>A True Shinobi<<<<

"Ready... Set... Go!"

All four genin jumped away, concealing themselves from the jonins view.

Or at least that's what Kakashi thought.

"IT'S TIME FOR THE MATCH TO BEGIN!!” A certain voice boomed. “Let’s have a real match, you and me!" Naruto stood behind Kakashi, his arms crossed.

"You may be thinking of the wrong kind of match..." Kakashi sighed. This student was going to be difficult.

"The only wrong thing here is your hairstyle!!" Naruto yelled, running at Kakashi.

As Kakashi reached into his pouch, Naruto stopped, thinking he'd pull out a weapon.

He pulled out a... Book. Usagi sweatdropped as she watched on. Only her dad would do something like that.

"Is something wrong?" Kakashi asked. I thought you were coming for me."

"But..." Naruto stared at him. "You... Why... I mean... You... That's a book!!"

"Of course it’s a book. I've been dying to find out how the story ends. It shouldn't matter if I'm reading or not, the outcome will be the same."

"... I'm gonna kill you!!" Naruto charged at the indirect insult.

... Kakashi was untouched as Naruto swung multiple times.

"Showing your back so much is bad, you dunce." Kakashi’s hands formed a sign as he stood behind the boy.

"Naruto!" Sakura screamed, thinking Kakashi would use some fancy fire jutsu and turn Naruto to ash. "Get out of there! You'll be killed!!"

Usagi, on the other hand knew exactly what jutsu her dad was going to use. 'Poor Naruro...'

As Naruro began to panic and get away, Kakashi made his move. "ONE THOUSAND YEARS OF DEATH!!"

Usagi couldn't help but wince at the sight. Poor, poor Naruto.

He was thrown into a nearby river. Two shuriken flew from the river not long after, but Kakashi caught them without even looking, his eyes still glued to the book before him.

A minute later, Naruto emerged from the water, then, six more of him appeared.

"Shadow clone jutsu!" Naruto yelled.

Usagi was surprised he knew the jutsu. She thought she was the only one in her class who could make shadow clones. 'I wonder when he learnt it...'

... So anyway, the clones attacked Kakashi, but he swapped himself with one of the clones, moving up into a safe tree.

Of at least he thought it was safe. He realized otherwise when he heard a whisper in his ear.

"Hi dad."

He quickly jumped from the tree, though Usagi followed behind, pulling out her fan.

That was when she noticed Naruto was now hanging upside down from a different tree.

Kakashi moved to grab the bell from under Naruto, but Usagi quickly activated her rinnegan, using the Deva path. With the wave of her arm, the bell was in her hand.

As she pocketed the bell, Kakashi was hit with a mix of shuriken and kunai.

"SASUKE THAT WAS TOO MUCH!!" Naruto yelled, still upside down.

Then, Kakashi turned into a log.

Usagi cursed under her breath, but then, one of the shadow clones she had set up, spotted the jonin. Hurray for joint vision!

Usagi quickly waved her fan, sending a blade of wind to cut Naruto down from the rope.

"How'd you do that?" He asked, landing on his feet.

Usagi didn't answer, and instead ran off after her dad.

While running, she heard a blood curdling scream. It was Sakura. Usagi quickly detoured to where she'd heard the scream, seeing an unconscious Sakura foaming at the mouth.

'Must've been some genjutsu...' Usagi thought, staring at Sakura. As she kneeled down next to her, she noticed her bell was gone. 'It was a fake... Damn it...'

She then transferred some of her chakra to Sakura, waking her up.

"Sasuke!!" She cried. "... Usagi...? Where'd Sasuke go?"

She then ran off, and Usagi decided to tag along. So, they ran through the forest together.

... When they found Sasuke, Sakura fainted again, screaming that he'd been beheaded.

She then fainted again.

Usagi stared down at her, her expression saying, 'are you for real?'.

"... Usagi." Sasuke's head called out. Usagi turned around to face him. "Can you... Help me?" He was so reluctant to ask for help.

Usagi brought her finger to her cheek, pretending to think about it.

"Usagi..." Sasuke warned.

 [What’s the magic word.]

"Are you serious?" Sasuke asked. Usagi pointed to the paper again.

"... Usagi, I'm not-"

Usagi shoved the notebook in his face.

"Please!" He yelled. Usagi put her notebook away, a smug smile on her face.

She then helped an extremely pissed off Sasuke out of the ground.

As she tried to locate Kakashi, Sasuke woke up Sakura.

'Found him!' She ran off, leaving Sasuke and Sakura.

Just as she reached her dad, preparing herself for an attack, the timer went off.

--Ten minutes later--

Naruto and Usagi had been tied to the stumps.

"Sensei, why is Usagi tied to a stump too?" Sakura asked.

"She knows exactly why." Kakashi glared at his daughter. Missing out on lunch was her punishment for eating breakfast. "Anyway, I have an announcement to make about this exercise. None of you need to worry about being sent back to the academy."

"So we passed?" Naruto asked, a smile growing on his face. "ALRIGHT! THIS ROCKS! IT MEANS WE ALL-"

"Are hopeless." Kakashi finished. "More schooling would be pointless. None of you will ever be shinobi."

"What do you mean give up?!" Naruto yelled. "Maybe us three didn’t get a bell, but Usagi did! And why should we quit over this?!"

"Usagi’s bell was a fake, and none of you have what it takes to become a proper shinobi."

That was when Sasuke charged at Kakashi...

Only to be squashed one second later.

"What you are is a bunch of spoiled brats."

"GET OFF OF SASUKE!!" Sakura screamed.

"Are you trying to make fun of shinobi with your behavior?" Did you even stop to consider why you were divided into teams?"

"... What?" Sakura was confused.

"Obviously not." Kakashi sighed. "So you've missed the entire point of the exercise."

"It had a point?" Naruto asked.

"Of course. And that point determines whether you fail or pass."

"But... You haven't explained what it is!" Sakura complained.

"I don't believe this..." Kakashi sighed.

"Come on, tell us already!!" Naruto yelled.

"Usagi, care to explain?" Kakashi motioned to Usagi, who was now completely free of the stump.

[TEAMWORK.] It was written in really big letters across the page.

"That's right. To my understanding, Usagi helped all of you out. She helped Naruro down from that tree, Sakura escape the genjutsu I cast, and helped unbury Sasuke. While she may not have helped in combat, she still made some kind of effort to work as a team. If you all worked together, you might have been able to take a bell."

"Wait, but there's only two bells!" Sakura pointed out. "Even if we worked together, two of us would still have to miss out on lunch! If you want us to work together, why put us against each other?!"

"This task was designed to pit you against each other."

"What?!" Naruto and Sakura freaked out.

"The situation was set up to reveal which of you would set aside your individual interests and propose the idea of working together. Instead, Sakura, you ignored Naruto who was right in front of you and focused on Sasuke, when you didn't even know where he was. Naruto, you tried to work singlehandedly, ignoring the rest of the team. Sasuke, you decided that everyone else would only burden you, and tried to work on your own... And Usagi, you've disappointed me the most. You didn't even try."

"You are supposed to work as a team. While its necessary for a ninja to have individual skills, what’s even more important now is teamwork! Going off on your own is bad for the entire team. It exposes your comrades to unnecessary danger. You might as well kill them yourself... Here's an example."

Kakashi pulled out a kunai and held it to Sasukes throat. "Sakura! Kill Naruto and Usagi or Sasuke dies."

"WHAT?!" Naruto panicked.

Kakashi then stood up, relieving the two students. "The day could come when one of you is taken hostage and you're forced to make such a choice. When you're on a mission, you're lives will always be on the line."

He then walked over to a memorial stone. "The names carved into this stone... They were all heroes of our village."

"I've made up my mind!" Naruto yelled. "That's where I want my name to go! I'm not gonna throw my life away! I wanna be a hero like the-" Naruto was cut off by Usagi throwing her notebook at his head. "What was that for?"

"The names engraved here aren't the names of just any heroes..."

Oblivious Naruto didn't understand. "What kinda heroes are they? Come on, tell me!"

"The people on this stone all died in the line of duty." Kakashi said. "This is a memorial, for those who were KIA, killed in action. It includes the names of my closest friends."

Usagi bowed her head slightly, honouring her dad’s friends. Usagi knew about Kakashi’s past, and how his family and friends had all died. The only family Kakashi had now was Usagi, and the only family Usagi had was Kakashi. The two had many friends, but they would always have a small hole in their hearts, crying out for love. The two both tried their best to fill each other’s hearts, and they did, but everyone has their bad days.

"... Pay attention." Kakashi spoke up again. "I'm giving you all one last chance, however, this one will be much more difficult than our last little game. If you're prepared to continue, you may eat one of the bento boxes... But there's no sharing with Naruto or Usagi. They can go hungry."

"But why?" Sakura asked.

"They brought it on themselves. Naruto, when he tried to sneak lunch for himself, and Usagi for going against my orders and eating breakfast. If you feed them, you fail the test. My word is law, do you understand?" He re-tied Usagi to the stump, being sure to bind her hands this time. After that, he disappeared in a cloud of smoke.

"This'll be a breeze..." Naruto laughed. "I can go without lunch, no problem!" His stomach then betrayed him, giving off a loud rumble.

So, Sakura and Sasuke began to eat their bento boxes. Usagi thought this was unfair, seeing as she was the one who made the bento’s in the first place.

As Naruto’s stomach continued to rumble, Sasuke got sick of hearing the noise.

"Here." He held out his bento box.

"But Sasuke!" Sakura nearly choked on her rice. "Kakashi-Sensei told us-"

"I'm not worried." Sasuke cut off Sakura. "He's probably miles away by now, and we'll need all our strength if we're gonna work together. You're no good to me if you're a liability."

Sakura then looked down at her bento. "Here. I'm on a diet anyway..." She then remembered something. "Usagi, you need to eat too!" Before she could feed Usagi and Naruto, a giant cloud of smoke appeared before them.

"YOU..." Kakashi jumped through the cloud of smoke, his voice low and angry... Until he had a complete mood swing. "Pass."

As Kakashi showed off his famous closed eye smile, everyone stood in shock.

"… We pass?!" Sakura questioned. "But... Why?"

Kakashi smiled as he explained, genuinely happy that the four managed to pass his test. "You've all just taken a huge step forward. Up until now, you've all listened and followed everything I've said... Well, except for Usagi, but that's beside the point. A true shinobi looks for the hidden meanings within the hidden meanings. In a ninja’s world, those who break the rules are scum... However, those who do not care for and support their comrades are worse than scum."

Usagi smiled at her dad. Moments like these made her proud to be his daughter.

"Alright. This exercise is now finished. You all pass! That's all for today, team seven. Your duties will begin tomorrow." Kakashi said, with a thumbs up. He was doing the nice guy pose.

"I did it! I did it! I'm a ninja!!" Naruto laughed as he cheered. He was so happy he could have cried.

"Let’s go home." Kakashi smiled, untying Usagi, who then walked off with her dad and the two genin.

"Wait, what about me?!" Naruto yelled, watching as they walked off into the sunset. "Guys?!"

And they all lived happily ever after.

_________________________________________________________________________

AN/ I had a Madoka Magica marathon earlier today. That’s a good anime to watch if you have spare time. Very different to Naruto, but still amazing.

Anyway. That’s way off topic. Team seven is official now! Yay! They can start going on missions together and meet a certain demon of the hidden mist soon perhaps?

I’m getting back into the swing of writing new chapters again! Writing chapter 40 at the moment, and my writing has improved! (In my opinion that is.)

Also, I have another fanfic written. It’s like a one shot of sorts but it’s broken up into ten chapters (it’s aprox 13000 words altogether). It’s a Kakashi X OC (Kakashi’s my favourite character, can you tell?) fanfic but I was unsure whether I should post it or not. If anyone’s interested it’s a story about a girl from earth and Kakashi (aged 19 so he’s in ANBU). It’s about fate and its dark and depressing (especially at the start.) but also very romantic (once again in my opinion though). I thought of writing a part two (as it ends on a cliff hanger) but I don’t know. If there was to be a part two it would most likely not have a happy ending. It'd be a sad love story of sorts. Yeah so if anyone would be interested in reading a story along those lines please let me know. If you read this whole paragraph, congratulations.

Thank you for reading!
